What should I say to Doctor???

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help with what I should say to the doctor today about my lack of progress? I have only lost 20 lbs. in 8 mos & YES I exercise regularly & vigorously.

I have expressed my dissatisfaction many times before to the doctor but all he wants to focus on is my diet. IF I COULD CONTROL MY DIET I WOULDN'T NEED THIS BAND! The problem is restriction or lack of it. I finally had the kind of restriction I needed to lose some weight but it became too tight & all the fill had to be removed (11/26) SO I'm starting all over. I think I have 6cc now (still no restriction  )but who knows since it seems different each time they fill or remove. Anyway, my issue is that I need a fill but he won't for another 2 weeks & I'm furious that is why I'm going in to talk to him. It has been months since I have lost 1 lb! I had planned on this weight being off by March '09 for my daughter's wedding & don't think I was being unreasonable in my expectations being that I only needed to lose a total of 50 lbs.

Please give me your opinions on what I should say or how to handle this. I'm self-pay so insurance isn't a factor.

Thanks for at least reading my post.

Well, the band just can't control what you put in your mouth, and since not all calories are created equal, that does matter.

I am so sorry for your frustration. Maybe a few sessions with a counselor and/or nutritionist would help get you on track? Having the band alone doesn't result in weight loss, as you have discovered. Its still a lot of work on the head issues.

I wish you the best of luck.

I too am a slow loser. My doctor’s first response is always what are you eating and are you working out. My problem is I’m sensitive to fills. The last 2 fills I’ve had to go back and get some removed. It’s crazy. My doctor’s thoughts were because I’m very short (4’ 10 ½”) that everything is just scrunched together for me. He also said because when I dieted normally I would lose slowly and that plays a part in my weight loss. He won’t give me another fill until I lose 15 pounds due to my sensitivity and this back and forth we play.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If your doctor is unwilling to work together with you on your fills, I would suggest talking to other doctors. You need to have a doctor who at least understands your frustrations and can help you utilize the band . I agree you have to work at it as well with diet and exercise. I went to counseling to work on my mental issues with food. Can’t say I’m cured but it does help.

Best of luck to you!

well crazycatlady i have questions for you. What doctor perform your procedure? If you are so unhappy with your doc why wont you switch? Do you write down everything you eat? If not you should that way you can refer back to where you may have went wrong. my only other guess would be that you didnt start off really obese and you are 155 now sometimes the body will only lose so much. But you should be happy with yourself. I wish u the best and hope every thing work out. But maybe you should keep a food journal to show your doc instead of telling him. Put some actions into those words you telling him. :)

CrazyCatLady,

I agree with keyke. I am at 149.5 right now and my doctor is telling me that I may be as low as the band will take me. He said I can get the extra 15 pounds off (my goal is 135) but that I would have to diet if off and work at it.

There are many on this board who reach low weights and small sizes, but I've yet to find one who didn't say that they worked their butts off for it, both with food choices and exercise.

Good luck to you! My daughter is getting married May 2010 and I'm already starting to plan! Isn't it exciting!?!

Please don't misunderstand...I have no restriction which to me makes it like not having the band therefore I'm back to relying on my will power which is none. As I stated b/4 if I had restriction the way it is suppose to be I wouldn't be as hungry & more able to make wiser choices & eat less as well. I'm not stupid in that I think I can eat whatever I want just because I have the band. I know better but I also know how it's suppose to feel from when I had my fill at Thanksgiving. It would have been perfect but I stressed out from the holiday/family/cooking, etc. & it swelled on me making it too tight. The doctor on call was not my doc & he was an ass as well & wanted to make sure he wasn't bothered again during the holiday w/e so he completely unfilled me.

I have done all that ya'll have suggested short of seeing a counselor for which I will not. I don't need head work I need restriction.

That makes perfect sense. I'd be frustrated as well. What a jerk for giving you a complete unfill. My doc has never done that for my tightness. I definitely suggest you seek out a new doctor or have a serious heart-to-heart withyour current doctor and remind him that you are paying for his services and expect to be treated with a little more courtesy and respect. After all, you are the patient and therfore know what your body (and your band) is telling you. Best of luck with your doctor. I know it's frustrating. I am sure once you get that fill you will be down in no time!

Crazycatlady,

I understand you have no restriction and I'm sorry for that, but you have to see where your doctor is coming from. I mean read HALF of the "problem losing" posts and it's all because they are lazy and eating a bunch of slider foods that are HORRIBLE to eat.

If you make a journal of what you are able to eat, your doctor will see that you are eating correctly, but you're eating too much food and should be happy to give you a fill.

There are so many people with the band that don't do what they are supposed to and just whine the whole time. I bet your doctor is just worried you are one of those. If you have concrete proof that's not the case, I bet he'll ease up on the fills. :)

Best of luck!!

My doctor requires a food journal with 3 days prior to my appointment documented before a fill. It must include calories and Protein. We review that along with my excercise log.

I agree maybe 155 is all your band will take you. WOW I wished I could be complaining about only being 155 LOL!!! Good luck with losing the rest.

I can eat a Subway 6" turkey with no problem at all & even though I eat only 1/2 of the 6" at a time the issue is I am able if I wanted to eat it all. At least I couldn't do that b/4 my unfill w/o major pb's.

All I really wanted to acheive by posting this was to see if anyone had a suggestion as to what I should say to him so that he would agree to give me the fill sooner than the usual 3 wk waiting period between. I need to have at least some restriction. Thanks to all anyway...

Thanks JeepGal. I'm really struggling right now. It's very frustrating to get so close to goal and then hit a wall. I'm too tight right now, going to get a slight until tomorrow and hoping that will help.

You've done amazing and should be very proud of yourself. You've proven you are willing to do what it takes, I know you'll make it to your ultimate goal!

ccl - we talked about the unfill; that put you in a huge disadvantage in having the band work and was unnecessary. tell that to your DR. let him know you went backwards in this process - and you need him to help move you forward.

withholding fills for any reason is sabotage in my mind - i joked when i was going every 3-4wks for a fill that i paid for a 10cc band and if i need 10ccs' FILL ME UP... again, joked - but was serious as well.

suzanneg - i know what your saying. it takes an awful lot of discipline for me to stay under 130 & a lot of time in the gym. i'm up/down 4lbs all the time it seems; tad annoying - but i'll take it.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
