Questions for the nutrition eval

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have my nutrition eval tomorrow and I believe at that time I will be informed on the food changes I should expect to make before and after surgery. However, I am afraid that there are things I should ask and I just won't remember on my own. Can you guys give me a list of things you wish you had asked, things you wish you had better understanding of ahead of time, and of course the things you think everyone should know. I don't want to waste what may be a golden opprotunity. Often I find if I had known something I would have made a better choice. Last week I made the mistake of having an eval by someone on a military base (to save money) and it was not a good experience. Hind thought made me call the nutritionist the surgeon recommended, that is who I will see tomorrow (the service is free BIG DUH). If you can help the needy one here, I just might be banned next month.

Thanks in advance

Well, my nutritionist told me all about the soda and not being able to have it again, but she didn't mention other foods that are not necessarily banned, but may present challenges to get down later, such as bread, red meat, tough-skinned fruits and vegetables.

I think a big question should be: What can you eat right after surgery, for how long, and for the long-term, what foods might you have to give up?

Another good question: Do they have a handbook or manual that they will give you so that you know what to do after surgery and what requirements your body will need...like Protein, Vitamins, et cetera.

I hope this eval. goes better for you! Take care!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
