How do I know if something gets "stuck"

Recommended Posts

I hear people complaining that food gets "stuck" if they dont chew well, or at certain times of the day, etc. How do I know if something is "stuck"? What does it feel like? Is it painful? I am just curious becuase I don't know if I had anything ever "stuck"..... T I A

You will know right away if something gets stuck, when it happened to me, I got an excruciating pain in my chest and was then violently sick. It was awful and I have been chewing like mad and eating really slowly ever since to avoid a repetition as it was just the worst pain

As the previous person said "you will know". For me, it isn't painful, just very very uncomfortable and I have to get up from the table and walk around. I don't know if the movement or getting up and stretching does something or what. It usually takes me a good 20 minutes to feel comfortable again.

For me it's like this...have you ever taken a swallow of something and realized it was going down "wrong"...we call it "down the wrong pipe".? Stuck is like that, only worse. AND it STAYS..it doesn't resolve like a "wrong swallow" It just sits there and causes feelings ranging from discomfort to outright pain. You'll know when you feel it; it is not a normal "large" swallow.

You will definetely know. For me, it's awful. I gag like I'm going to throw up, but I can't. I get like slimy spit that comes up that I have to spit out, all at the same time it feels like someone is sitting on your chest. It does take about 20 minutes to go away.

Have you ever accidentally swallowed a large ice cube whole? That is what it feels like for me...and it is miserable.

Like everyone said here, you WILL know! I had my first real "stuck" experience the other day and let me tell you, it sucked! It hurt like hell, I didn't know what to do! I ate a small piece of italian bread (yeah, stupid, I know) dipped in this lemony sauce...I didn't chew it well enough and swallowed too fast...it was a horrible experience...I was afraid to throw up because I didn't want to hurt my band so I kept trying to keep it down...but when that stuff wants to come out, it will! So I tried coughing and whenever I did, slimy stuff came out (sorry to be so graphic)...after about a 45 minutes of this, I finally felt better. Lost my appetite completely after this, which is good because your not suppose to eat any solids after this happens...you should immediately go on liquids for 24hrs (at least this is what my doctor suggested).

I hope you never experience this! Chew the hell out of your food and when you think your good, chew some more!

Like it was said before you will definitely know when something gets stuck. It feels almost like someone is puncing you in the chest and the back at the same time. For me it is uncomfortable to sit, stand, basically exist for like 1/2 hour. I hope you never experience this either.

Hah, I have been wondering the same thing since surgery, but low and behold it happened to me last night for the first time and trust me, You will KNOW when it happens. I took a long nap yesterday, and for some reason when I lay down and get up, my band is terribly tight. I didn't wake up last night until around 8pm and was starving. I went into the kitchen to heat up some pot roast with gravy on it but while it was heating up, I grabbed a potato and took a huge bite out of it, thinking I would just chew it up to mashed potato form and I swallowed. I guess the bite was way to big and then the chest pain set in, it radiated to my back. Then my mouth started watering like crazy. I tried to take a drink of something to wash it down and that was WAY the wrong thing to do. Then I started burping and up with the burps came the drink mixed with the potato. That kept happening over and over for about 5 minutes util I think the potato was all up. (sorry so graphic) Needless to say I was so darn scared, I lost my appetite and waited about and hour and just drank a protien shake. YOU WILL KNOW WHEN IT HAPPENS!!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
