Weight loss and when to start working out???

Recommended Posts

Okay I had my surgury on 12/11/08, and have only lost 12 pounds. I am frusterated because I guess I was thinking I would have lost more than that, but I know it has also will barely be two weeks on xmas day. So my question is, is 12 good or bad? And when can I start or should start to exercise, because I want to get this weight off. I currently started out at 240 on surgury day and now 228.

12lbs is great for a 2 week progress think about this normal healthy weightloss is 1 to 2 lbs a week about 4 to 10 lbs a month and in half that time you lost double. you should be proud. you will see it will only get harder im not trying to discourage you but the less weight you have the harder it gets and excerise will be a important key to a faster and healthier weight loss imagine it took you more then 2 weeks to put that 12 lbs on so pat yourself on the back and be proud of those 12 lbs gone.... this will not be a miracle band and you havent put the weight on in just 2 months so it will take awhile to get it off just work hard and dont get distracted.

I think 12lb is great too.

I started exercising the day after my surgery - just walking, but I never missed a day. I did about half an hour - 3kms or so of brisk but not really strenuous walking. By about 3 weeks i was back to normal and was able to powerwalk and by 3 months I started running.

I started exercising two days after surgery - just a slow walk for about 4kms. It was a tad long though, I was a bit shaky when I got home!

But two days later I did the same walk, a little faster, and was fine.

I started cycling 2 weeks after surgery on a stationary spin bike for 20 minutes at a time at around 45-50rpm 3 times a week, managing about 15 to 20kms.

I slowly built up endurance and now do 35-40kms (40mins) at 55-60rpm 3 times a week, with an hour powerwalk at least once a week.

I think 12lbs in two weeks is really great, and a lot to be happy about!

Hi. I too was banded on 12/11/08 and have lost 12 pounds. I too am walking daily - at least 30 minutes. I'm looking forward to adding more variety to my fitness program. A Wii Fit is 'in the mail'

It is never to early to start exercising. Just make sure you dont do the wrong ones too early... The best exercise right now is walking like Nazzy suggested.. I like Nazzy walk two miles a day and you would not believe how much that works. It is a nice relaxing exercise.. I am getting weights for christmas and will start working on toning then.. Congrats on the weight loss so far.. keep up the good work and just remember it is not going to fall off over night. As much as we all wish it would.. it wont..

I think any weight loss is awesome. You are doing a great job!

As far as exercise, I was not up to speed walking until, 14 days post op. But once I started it really helped those inches fly off. I am now down three pant sizes and I have lost 32 pounds. I feel great and energized.

It is going to take time, so be patient!! Everyone loses weight differently. Some drop it fast and some don't really start to lose until they get their adjustments.

Also, remember, this isn't bypass surgery where people lose weight quickly...it is going to take time. So take a deep breath and be patient. You are going to look back at the time you lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks and see how great that was. In the future, 1 to 2 pounds a week is NORMAL and anything above that is gravy.

Merry Christmas!!

I figure ANY weight loss is good weight loss !!!

Like many have already said, everyone loses weight differently. The band effects everyone differently, but it is hard not to compare your weight loss to others that were banded at the same time you were.

My dietician would take out this blob of fat put it on her desk and say Julie you are doing great just imagine 13lbs of this is what you have lost and thats alot... she said to stop being disappointed in myself for not losing as much as I thought I should lose. everybody loses weight at different rates.

so be proud of yourself you are doing excellent...

Julie

As you lose restriction from the swelling, your appetite will return and the weight loss will slow until you start getting fills. My Dr said I might even gain a few pounds back (I hope not). I lost 9 or 10 in the first 2 weeks and only 2 since then. I get my first fill Jan 6th. Now is the time to heal. We are in this for the long haul and we have plenty of time to lose weight. We can exercise as we feel up to it or as or Dr advises, with walking, as everyone said, being ok immediately.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
