Got suck and threw up!

Recommended Posts

OMG...that was horrible!

I had just started eating my dinner tonight (curry beef stew), and bamm! I was stuck, real bad! I ran to the washroom, and then the slimming :drool:began, then I threw up! I couldn't believe it, I have been getting stuck all along, but I never threw up before.

Now I'm wondering about my first fill. I am going into my 4th week, and not feeling much restriction anymore, I had great restriction untill last week, but I guess that was just from the intial swelling.

I feel like I need a fill, because I could eat a horse, but will the stuck episodes get worse?

You need to take itty bitty bites. All of us get stuck if we take too big of a bite. When we say tiny, we mean the size of a pencil eraser. Chew it up until it's liquid in your mouth. Then wait and see how it goes down. Eating fast is another thing that will make us get stuck.

You probably do need a fill because almost everyone does. There are a few people who have gone months with no fill and lost well. Just remember the tiny bites and chewing until it's liquid, then waiting before taking another bite. If you do that, you won't get stuck.

Sorry about that! It can be bad, but we do learn from our mistakes. in the first 5 months I had that happen a few times. Slooww dooowwn and Chew, chew and then chew some more, tiny fork ( I use seafood fork) down in between bites, 1/4 inch food pieces, one at a time, this will also aleviate some of the belching from the "too big" bites. Set your timer for 30 minutes. This will help you learn how much you can eat. If yu cant get it down to mushy in 30 minutes, BBZZ times up. wait til next meal time. Remember we are having to train ourselves how to eat the corect way. It will take time. I was banded in Jan 08, down from 16/18 to a 6/8, 10 pounds form goal. It is a struggle at this point, I now have 8cc in my 10 cc band, I normally keep my full feeling about 5 hours after eating. Good luck!!

I have had five fills and I can tell you that you definitely want to take it SLOWWWWLLLY after a fill.

We are told to take small bites, chew well and eat slowly blah, blah, blah. At first we watch this closely then eventually we relax and get conditioned on what we can and can not tolerate, how big of a bite to take how fast to eat etc without having to focus on every move. We do get distracted and make mistakes but for the most part we get accustomed to what we can handle.

But a fill can change what, how and how much we were previously able to eat. There is a chance that the first fill will not make a big difference but it will probably make getting stuck a little easier. After a fill or two you might not be able to tolerate certain foods as well as you could before, you might have to take smaller bites or eat slower. But eventually you will settle in and get accustomed to your new level of restriction.

It may take two or three fills to really feel it. If you are like me, you may have restriction after a fill or two, lose weight thus losing fat around the band, and need another fill but eventually you should reach your sweet spot.

It is a learning process, we have to re-train ourselves to eat properly but eventually it becomes second nature...the way it should be.

I always experience more stuck/pb episodes after a fill because I get used to what I can eat . . . and then have to relearn with each fill because it is a little different.

If you eat too fast, or too much, you can have relatively little restriction but still get stuck and pb. It is even possible that you need another fill but just have to get back to the slow eating and "chew to goo" practices.

Wow your doctor let you eat solids 3 weeks post op? I was on mushie foods during that time. I would take it slow if you are getting stuck all the time. Maybe go back to soft foods.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
