2 questions: shoulder pain after a fill & general food question

Recommended Posts

I developed shoulder pain after my first fill on 11/11. On the same day. It feels much like the shoulder pain I had after surgery on 9/22 (which went away in a few weeks). I don't think it's a coincidence. Has this happened to anyone else?

Also, I have not lost any weight since the 2 weeks post-op liquid phase of my diet. Here is my biggest fear - having all the worst aspects of the band (pain, pressure, not being able to eat many foods, etc..) without the one benefit I wanted when I got this band - controlling my hunger. I know one fill doesn't usually do it - but I've already had one bad episode at Thanksgiving. After two bites of food - one stuffing and the other cornbread, I had major pain for a half an hour. I must have either eaten too big a bite or not chewed enough because I don't think it was the food itself. Anyway, any thoughts? I am frustrated at this point. Is it a trade off - pain in order to control hunger? I just read so much about people PBing and vomiting and having pain. I know myself and I will not lose weight unless my hunger is controlled. I weigh 183 now and have lost 63 pounds on my own and through all the dieting with this program and procedure.

Never had any shoulder pain after a fill , you should ask your doctor about that.

As for the PB after thanksgiving , Cornbread and stuffing , i think would make most bandsters PB ! bread is a big no no for me and so is stuffing ! Combine that with the possibility of not chewing well enough and or taking too big of bites your setting yourself up to PB . No its not a trade off, it does not have to be both, but to be 100% honest w/ you you have to have a few things ,

1. With the band comes common sense ... meaning if you know breads MIGHT Be a problem then IF You decide to eat them you have to make sure you chew them to a pulp . If after that you KNOW you chewed well and you get stuck , then dont eat them again .

2. With the band still has to come some self control.

You can still eat a bucket of ice cream if you tried, does that mean you do ? NO .

3. Does things get better w/ the fills . YES . BUt you have to have some patients, in the mean time do not sabatoage yourself.

One fill USUALLY is not going to give you restriction . Fills can take up to 2 weeks to kick in . If after a few weeks you do not feel like you have restriction go get another fill .

Thank you Mindy for your response. I am going to ask my doctor about the shoulder pain. If he doesn't think it's related to the banding or fill (and he probably won't) then I am going to my PCP. As for the stuffing and cornbread - I had eaten stuffing before but only in those frozen diet dinners. And I thought cornbread was crumbly not sticky like rolls- but I do think I took too big of a bite and didn't chew. I will say this in all honesty - food does not taste good to me now. After all that chewing it just loses its taste to me. I will adhere to the diet and continue with fills but I haven't enjoyed food in a long time and I certainly haven't been satisfied with eating. I don't identify with a lot of the eating histories of people on this board. I didn't eat fast food or a gallon of ice cream or have a lot of junk food in the house. I just ate more calories of normal food than I burned. And I did this over 30+ years. I am 57. I am not unhappy with the weight I am now but to lose more weight I am going to need some help from this band.

A good rule of thumb is anything that can expand in water/ or in your stomach can get stuck , bread, rice Pasta, ect.

So if you think it could expand try a little OR what i do is eat it last and just a bite or too.

I understand what you mean about not identifying with a lot of the food issues. I was a grazier , I did not binge eat , or anything i just ate a little but often . So probably similar to you ate more than i burned. So i understand how it can be frustrating .

I will tell you that food for me now is more abotu quality , Good FRESH , well seasoned food. I eat healtiher now than I ever have in my life.

Food is just food now its more about eating to live !

Feel free to email me at if you like to talk .

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
