When do you start exercising?

Recommended Posts

I was only banded yesterday so I don't feel like exercising just yet but I do really want to make this work. I don't see my doctor until 23rd Jan when he gets back from holidays. How long did your doctor tell you to wait before exercising?

All that information was given to me at discharge. It depends on your doctor. My surgeon said once I feel up to it. I am 2 weeks out and am now feeling like I could really get back to a major workout. Start with walking and work from there. That is one of the best exercises anyway. Good luck!

Hi, congrats on your surgery!! I was told to start exercising one week post op. I asked if strolling in the neighborhood was ok before the one week mark if I felt like it because it helped so much with the gas. I am up to 40mins on the eliptical machine. Starting early really seemed to help me keep from feeling so sluggish after surgery I had my tonsills out a couple of years ago and was told to lay around, not lift anything ect. so I didn't bleed. It took a month for me to get my strength back. This has been so much easier. I would definately check with your doctor on this to be on the safe side. Good luck!!

I was banded on Friday (12/5) and the docs instructions for me was to walk as soon as possible and then after a few weeks I could step up the exercise. You want to be very careful while your incisions are healing to not do anything to damage that process. So start walking and build up from there like HDSantoni said. Myself I have already started walking and plan in a month to start a more vigerous exercise program.

I was walking right away. I was cleared for normal exercise at 4 weeks and I started going to the gym regularly again. I had some port pain with abdominals and my doctor said give it another two weeks for abdominals but aerobics were fine. I was a little weak and slow weeks 4-6 but by week 7 I felt pretty darn good and exercise was no problem at all.

Thanks everyone. Exercise really isn't my thing (which is why i'm overweight I guess) so I figure I'm going to need to make it routine and vary what I do. Walking will be the first thing I try. I enjoy swimming so as soon as the wounds are completely healed I'm going to brave the swimming pool a couple of times per week.

I went back to my workout routine 14-days post op. I am on the tread mill twice a day now for 4.5 miles, plus every other day I am doing upper body workouts with free weights.

I feel great!

If you really enjoy swimming you might be interested in deep Water aerobics. My aunt whom had this surgery 4 years ago swears by it. She went from a 26 to a 12 by working the band with diet and the deep Water aerobics. You might just have to check into your local Y to see if they have them and if they will work for your schedule. Best of luck!

I was having severe back pain after my surgery due to my port and was told no vigorous exercise until 6 weeks postop due to that. Shopping-type walking is all I am allowed for now.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
