Still recovering....normal?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I had surgery last Friday, also had a Hiatal Hernia repaired, and I really thought that I would be feeling better by now.

Is it normal to still be sore? I'm still not taking much in either, maybe 1/2 cup Soup, 1/4 of Optifast once or twice a day , and some Water. I feel like I should be eating more, but I can't. The gas has almost completely gone, so I am very excited about that. I think if I had more variety diet wise I might eat more. Any suggestion's? Thanks everyone for your input on this Forum, it's been a life saver.

I think a lot of people take this surgery as not being so serious, but I mean come on. . it's STOMACH surgery. Heh. I'm still a bit sore too and it's been over a week now. But everyday it gets bettery. I'm sure our full recovery is right around the corner!

Also, I'm up to about 6-8 ounces of Soup on my two week full liquid. So if you are feeling like you aren't eating enough, I would definitely get in touch with your surgeon or clinic and see if you should maybe come in for a looksy.

I am only 3 days post op and can drink some coffee (with tons of milk), Soup and Water and some tea at night. All the servings are maybe 1/3 cup. I am most worried about water but it is clear I can't drink a lot so I just take sips.

The first four days after surgery, I hardly could drink more than 2 cups of any liquid per day, which included my Water. And I could only sip little bits at a time. The 6th day was a drastic increase, meaning from 2 cups to maybe 4-5. I'm on day 8 and have had I think about 4.5 cups of liquid so far today, about 2.5 of which are water. I'm pretty sore still, and didn't have a hiatal hernia repaired.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
