Type of X-ray for potential slip

Recommended Posts

It seems everyone needs to have a barium swallow with an X-ray to determine a slip, right? Just an X-ray without the barium can't possibly show anything or can it? My doc wanted to do just an X-ray to see if the band had moved. The nurse said they could tell from the position of the band on the X-ray whether the band placement had moved and therefore whether it slipped. This didn't make sense to me because I've heard on here how so many people need the barium to show the path of the liquid. Opinions on this anyone?

I've had a lot of acid reflux and not able to eat very much more than liquids so I had a partial unfill and was quite well for a few days, but then I think I overdid it a bit on the food which probably aggravated things again and I'm back to a lot of acid reflux and liquids. I'm so worried I have a slip, BUT I will not have an X-ray taken unless I absolutely have to (for radiation/health reasons). This is why I refused the first X-ray and got a partial unfill instead, because it didn't make sense to do it without the barium. I just want to educate myself fully before I get this durn X-ray taken, because I sure don't want to have to get another one done with barium at a later time. :smile2: (I'm the type that won't even use a cell phone:tongue_smilie:)

My surgeon does fluoro with his fills every so often to make sure that the band is still in place. With fluoro you do have to swallow a tiny amount of barium but it isn't as involved as the barium swallow/upper GI test done pre-op.

Well, I've never had any barium swallow pre or post-op so I don't know anything about this. What is the process involved with fluoro?

Mine did my first fluoro with my first fill and now that I am at six months he wants to do another one with my next fill to make sure everything is OK.

With the first one, He inserted the needle into my port did a slight fill then had me walk over to the x-ray machine. He had me swallow just a tiny bit of barium the consistency of Pepto Bismol while he watched it go down then he had me swallow Water and watched that go down, it was very quick.

With the pre-op upper GI I had to swallow some stuff the consitency of rock salt then chase it down with barium the consistency of yogurt (UGH! that was terrible!!!) Then I sipped the chalky stuff through a strawwhile lying down first on one side, then the other, then on my tummy while they scanned me all around then the table stood me up and they scanned me all around again...much more involved.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
