PCP sent forward referral to Bariatric group!

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I am so excited my PCP just emailed me that he sent forward a referral to the Kaiser Bariatric group. Now I have to wait to see if they approve me for the program.

One hoop down a few more to go unfortunately with Kaiser. Wish me luck!

I was told I would be referred to Kaiser Fremont. I know you usually have to see dietician and have psyc eval as a next step. Have you done this yet?

no I havent but I got an appointment for the orientation for jan 19th in panarama city. After that they said I would get an appointment with the doctor then after that a 6 month class also in panarama city. The coordinator on the phone said that they would go over all of the surgery options. They said plan on it taking close to a year from start to finish. they didnt say anything about the psyc yet but they did say I would have to lose 10% of my body weight and that would be done through the 6 month program I think the 6 month program may have the psyc step in it as part of the class but Im just guessing. he said the class was to prepare you for a lifetime change . I am researching all of the options because they will be discussing all of them and recommending based on each case so I want to prepared just in case they try to discourage the lap band for me because Im not sure Im comfortable with them removing and re routing body parts. If I get the Lap band done it would be in the south bay area that is where they do the lap band surgery he said the others would be at UCLA. I have fear and hope running through me right now. Im pretty thankful though that they make us go through a 6 month program to prepare us this is such a huge life change that I want to be absolutly ready for it.

Kaiser's program is great, they want you to be fully prepared and it really weeds out folks who just "want" the surgery so it will be easier to lose weight. It is a change for the rest of your life and Kaiser wants to make sure you are ready. I am at Kaiser Richmond, plus I am in classes for 4 months at Kaiser Santa Rosa. I have done the orientation (with the "beginning" weight recorded), blood tests, apnea screening, 3rd class is tonight and I have another appt in Richmond in 2 weeks for the Psych evaluation. Every step so far has been helpful, and I have already lost 11 lbs!

I agree that kaiser is great I just called them up a little bit ago to find out what the next step was and they really explained a lot to me which is how I got the date for my orientation already. Thats great that you have already lost 11 pounds. Do they put you on a diet in the classes or are you just expected to lose the 10%. So whatever my weight is at orientation I will need to lose 10% if that before surgery? I will make sure I dont take my dieretics for a few days before the orientation lol, im just kidding.

For the Kaiser Richmond program, they start your weight at the weigh-in orientation. Some Kaiser programs will take it from a doctor's office weigh-in, but mine didn't (my highest weight was at orientation weigh-in, so that was OK with me!) With the weekly class I am in, the weigh me there too and put it in the file. Also they take my blood pressure all of the flippin' time! Once I started it seems like it is going fast, and the sooner I lose my weight (I assume it is 10%, but my surgeon will decide and I have not met with him yet) the sooner they will schedule my surgery. My goal is to have lost 10% by the time I see my surgeon. Good luck and keep in touch!

PS, Kaiser Richmond has their bariatric surgery binder online at their website if you want a preview. Good luck!

Hi everyone! My name is Christine, 32 years old and from the Sacramento area and I'm also going through Kaiser Richmond. I had orientation on 11/25, last Tuesday. It was very informative and made me even more excited and motivated to get going with this major life change!

I should be getting my next appt within a day or so for either the psychologist or surgeon, then will have the other (psych or surgeon), then attend another 5 hour nutrition class. Liz, the case manager said that after that, once you lose the weight that your surgeon requires that they will schedule your surgery. She said it's about 4-6 months from orientation date but that if you lose the required weight faster it could be even sooner.

I started the 1200 calorie diet on Friday and am hoping to be on the fast track! I don't know how much the surgeon will want me to lose, so I'm just losing as much as I can. I figure if I lose more than he requires it's just weight that I don't have to lose later.

Good to meet you all! I'm glad to see some local Kaiser people here. It seems that the Kaiser experience is much different than other insurances.

Hi Christine, when you went to orientation did they record your weight? I know that we are required to lose 10% of our weight but was wondering if the orientation meeting is the the weight they use?

Yes, they did take my weight. They said that this will be my starting weight and what all my appts will be referred back to. At orientation I was told that everyone is asked to lose a certain amount, but that it differs between every patient and is up to the surgeon. I started my 1200 calorie diet on Friday and am hoping that I'll have a good head start on my weight loss before talking to the surgeon.

Hello All

I am pre opt and going through Richmond Kaiser. Waiting for my orientation appointment which I assume will be in January somtime. So I have to wait to start on the 10% weight loss? I was hoping to have lost the 10% by the orientation since I have to wait so long.

Would love to stay in touch and see how it goes for everyone.

I am Not going to try to lose any weight until I am weighed in on the 19th of january because I am afraid that my weight loss will slow down if I start before they record my official weight and I want to be able to lose that 10%. Im getting excited for the orientation. I have been doing a lot of research and am kinda of wavering back and forth between lap band and the sleeve Gasterectomy. we will see how I feel about it after the orientation.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
