It's not a silly question!

Unfortunately, drinking with a straw with the band is a no-no. When you drink through a straw you tend to take in a lot of air along with the liquid. Air in the stomach causes burping, and burping isn't a good thing, especially when you're first banded. The stitches around the band have to heal, and burping can cause the stitches to move more than they should.

You were misinformed. Do a Google search of "using a straw with lap band" and see what you turn up. Also call your surgeon and ask him/her.

Yep definately told no straw with lap band. Too much excess air in pouch, can cause stretching. Good luck.

Check some of the other posts. Many have used straws and it is ok. Every doctor is different. Some on here like to think they know it all.

I was also told no straw, but as has already been said, every doctor is different. Can you call the clinic where you were banded ?

I think it comes down to the surgeons personal opinion. I asked him about drinking with a straw he said " Jill if drinking with a straw gets the Water down then drink with a straw" He said that he never heard of side effects of drinking with a straw.

I get so much more water in now. I don't even realize when I have drank 32 ounces...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
