Do they leave the I.V. in overnight?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to decide what to pack for my overnight stay at the hospital, and whether to bring my own pajamas or wear the hospital gown. Do they leave the I.V. in overnight? If so, I won't bother with my own PJ's. Thanks.

I had a baggy t-shirt and pj pants but ended up spending the whole night in the hospital gown anyway. I figure, its only one night. And yes, the IV was left in til it was time to leave the next day.

Yes they leave the IV in. You're staying for monitoring, in case you need more care. It would be imprudent for them to remove it and then you need another stick for a new IV etc. So it will stay until you go home.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll be having teh I.V. in all night, so I'll just wear the hospital's gown and won't bother trying to change into my own PJ's.

I was just banded on 11/5 - I highly suggest a pair of shorts (stretch waist) or pj bottoms - when you're up walking the halls, you'll really appreciate them! I didn't bring mine - ended up using another hospital gown and putting it on backwards. My suggestion for what to bring (I was in for two days):your own pillow (best thing I brought!), chapstick, cell phone (make sure they allow you to use it with all their equipment-I couldn't call my home or my husband's cell phone with the hospital phone). Good luck - I'm on day 4 and I'm walking, doing light housechores, and drove yesterday.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
