6 days post surgey - and a new problem - please help!

Recommended Posts

I am having an immense amount of pressure/pain in my port site when I stand or sit. This just started yesterday afternoon. I was fine with walking until this happened, and now the only position I can handle is flat on my back. Does anyone out there no what is happening? It literally feels like a 100# weight hanging from that spot on my tummy whenever I stand now.

hello kritzz, i'm pretty much right where you are being 7days post -op. im not in too much pain at the port site but i do feel it when i sit or stand. it does'nt bother me anymore to cough, but when i sneezed it almost killed me:bored::cursing:. sometimes even when i'm laying completley still i feel tenderness. and yes that tight feeling also like a weight is hanging..lol it's weird but nomal and i think it can last up to about 6 weeks post-op. i was told because that's where they had to cut and inplant the port . I don't have the gas pains too much anymore either, i'm able to burp more and that's a huge relief:). but yes i've had that feeling the entire time now.

I was banded on the 27th and have not had that pain you are talking about. I did have pain in my back just below my left shoulder that felt like someone was sticking a knife in me. I finally realized it was gas pressure and after 5 hours of pain I had my first bowel movement since surgery. The pain went away after that.

Hang in there...

Hi, I'm new to the site and I was just banded 4 days ago. Not much for pain but I'm incredibly weak. I'm drinking my fluids but some of the flavors I wouldn't have minded a week ago are unpalatable to me now. I'm only taking Water and orange popsicles. Is this normal? I feel like I'll never want to eat again.

Hi everyone,

I was banded on 6/24/08 - The first week the port area was very sore and the gas got the best of me - the biggest thing is to eat slow - you might not feel much restriction once the swelling goes down. Good luck to everyone!!!! I've lost 40 lbs as of this morning, it works and I'm not hungry anymore

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement and advice! I love this site. I am feeling a little better this evening. Most of that pressure/pain I think is gas as well. Man has that gas been a killer. This too will pass - can't wait!!!! :rolleyes2:

I was told that the sensation we are experiencing goes away after a few weeks. It's the nerves reacting to having a port stitched to muscle and trying to adjust to something being where naturally it isn't. It doubles me over sometimes, so I trade off heat and ice and take an ibuprofen and that helps. Maybe it can help you too. It does get better with time, less frequent at least. I'm 11 days post band... I will hope that it gets better for you too!

I too had port pain a week out from surgery. I even went to see my doc because I was so worried. He prescribed an abdomen binder, kind of like a girdle that I wore for about 10 days and it worked wonders! :smile2:

Hi Pegs!

I bought a belly bandit (post pregnancy compression belt) that came in sooooo handy about 1 week after my surgery. There's something about the binding compression that alleviates the port pain! You can get the same kind of compression from other post-surgical garments and maybe Spanx.< /p>

You need to find a way to get your Protein Drinks in. You will make yourself sick if you only consume Water and popsicles. Most bandsters are told to get at least 60g Protein in a day. If you can't face a Protein Drink you really need to call your surgeon's office. There are many drinks out there. If you don't like one, try a different one. I drink Worldwide Protein Shakes, low in sugar (1g) carbs (4g) and fat (1g with .5 sat fat) (available in all flavors--if you like chocolate try the Cookies 'n Cream--like drinking Oreos--at Vitamin Shoppe, $2.79 individually, but $27.99 for a 12 pack, about $2.33 each--Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, banana Cream and Cookies 'n Cream). Trader Joe carries vanilla and Chocolate in 21g and 35g, $1.69 for the 21s and $2.29 for the 35s--these prices are in Maryland). They are ready to drink. I take them to work and have them for Breakfast. If you like powders to mix, unjury (unjury.com) comes in vanilla, Chocolate, strawberry, Plain, and chicken Soup.

Whatever you do please don't continue with just water and popsicles. You really need Protein.< /p>

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
