Band Slip?

Recommended Posts

I have read many posts on this site over the last 8 months. I was banded in February and I am losing weight so I am happy. My last fill was in July and it was fairly tight at first since I hadn't really been losing much weight.

Since that fill I notice a huge difference in the amount I can eat. Now I know what people mean by only being able to eat 1/2 cup of food. Well about a month ago I think I over did it and I ate something that really wasn't to good for me. I think it was grilled chicken (you know kind of dry so wasn't really a smart choice, duh). Anyway, the end result was having to run to the bathroom and get rid of it. This wasn't the normal PB or Slime as I have read about. **Sorry for the graphic nature! This was a full out throw up. The kind where you get all red in the face and strain. It really made me nervous afterwards. Since then I seem to have days when it is hard to get things down more often. Then when I eat something it burns. Only sometimes but when this happens I am miserable! I seem to have the PB and sliming more, too. Of course, this could be that I wait too long between meals and eat too fast, too. ??? I wish I just knew what it was. I need to make an appointment for a barium swallow to be sure. I've just been sooo busy and putting it off since it is a long drive to my Dr.

My question... if your band slips... do you know it right away? I am so terrified of this and have been so careful but I think I did something when I ate that chicken. ??? The last month it seems like I have days when I can eat just fine and then the next day it hurts again and it is tough getting it down. Is this slippage or normal for having a tight fill??

Thanks a bunch for listening and giving me your thoughts!

I've also had the same thing's happening, but, my doctor said if my band had slipped that I would not be able to keep ANYTHING down, no Water or food, so he tells me I'm fine. He said if it's slipped it will also be painful, so I think you're ok, but I'd definitely check with your doctor.

Hi Grace

This is my first reply so here goes!!!:)

I really would go for a x-ray as soon as possible or have a de-fill .Its the only way you can be sure .

The same thing happened to me around the same time and i went for a x-ray 2 weeks ago and confirmed my band has slipped so unfortunately having it removed on the 14th nov ,i have had the band 18months and lost 5 stone with some more to go but i have no choice leaving a slipped band can pose more serious complications as im sure you must know.its just not worth it, i dont get any pain just symptoms of a over tight band (i had all my Fluid out in august so should have no restriction!)after my holiday in july, when i know my band slipped when i was really ill, i think i even felt it slip!!!!:crying:

And since then i have had no relief and acid like you wouldnt believe .

I really hope yours hasnt slipped and you get back on track, but this has been my experience ,had the aftercare been supportive after 12mths i can honestly say this wouldnt of happened but hey -ho things could be worse !!!!!!:confused_smile:Please get it checked out.

(lovin the smilies)

take care and good luck

louise :)

I can eat Soup and drink with no problems. I can also eat crackers ~ if that makes sense??? Maybe I am just so hungry, I am not chewing good enough. You would think after all this time I would know to chew well. But after eating only 1 chicken nugget you get really hungry. I think I fare worse when I go long periods without eating. Then things don't go down well at all.

Louise, I am so sorry about your band having to be removed. That is my biggest fear! Will they be able to put it back? I think this is the reason I have avoided going in to the doctor. I don't want to hear it has slipped. I have put a call into the nurse just to ask questions. I am not totally sure I have slipped because there are days when eating is no problem. It just seems strange that I'm eating good for 2 days and then having issues the next 2. Weird! My band is my lifejacket so I'd hate to lose it. I am finally into clothes that look good and I was actually able to buy a bra that is not special ordered! I was sooo excited to put on a new outfit and feel good. So needless to say I am going to be devastated if it has slipped! I think I might go to broth over the weekend and see if it gets better. Oh the dread of going in for the barium swallow! So after one episode of arfing up food you can make it slip???

Sundance, I can totally relate. One nugget... geez it is the 10 nuggets, large fries, and diet coke that got me to have surgery in the first place! What makes me think 1 nugget is going to fill me up. But seriously, 2 nuggets and I'm good to go. I do think I tend to eat too much because even 1 cup of food is sooooo much less than I ever ate in one sitting! Now only 1/2 cup and I'm stuffed. Sometimes less than 1/2 cup... so how do I shut my head up?? So what do you think is going on with you and your band? Could it be that we are just a little too tight?

Oh I do hope it is just a little too tight! Please cross your fingers ladies. The thought of surgery to have it removed will just depress me to no end! I just started feeling good about myself again and not having the band is like losing all control! YIKES

Maybe I am a little too tight. When I first got this fill, I could not hardly swallow Water. I stuck it out and it got a lot better after about a month. A long month of drinking hot tea with lots of honey to make it go down. Then I could eat but not until after 2pm. At supper, I could eat with only a few problems. Now it seems that it has somehow gotten tighter. But I can eat a few crackers or nabs in the morning and very very little at night. It has kinda reversed itself. Every great now and then, the last time was about 3 weeks ago, I ate about 10 shrimp and a couple bites of potatoe salad. I am kinda wondering if the weather has anything to do with it. It has started to turn cold...Is that even possible??? I fear a slip. My doctor was (of course) in Mexico and no doctor in my town will touch me. I see a fill doctor from FillCenters USA about 5 hours away. He does not have flouro, but says "you will know if you slip" but lots on her do not know. I don't think he is a surgeon that could fix a slip either. I think he just does the fills. A year ago, when I was considering this, I saw not complications. 1 month after, all I see is complications. It makes me very scared. I think I am going to do the liquids for a few days and see if things get better. I have not lost any weight in like 3 months and my 7 pound dog eats more than me. What gives???

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
