Stop! Don't take another bite!

Recommended Posts

I was wondering the same thing!

Wouldn't it be great if all of the bands came with an alarm? It could say something like... "Beep-beep.... back away from the plate....beep-beep. This has been a warning of the you will PB alarm system."

Ok, I can tend to get silly, but you get the picture.:grouphug:

I'm gonna tell you exactly what is in my manual given to me by my Dr. to follow after surgery:

Stage 1: Clear liquid diet (24 hours)

You will begin the clear liquid diet the day of your surgery, when your surgeon feels it is appropriate. The main goal at this point is just to keep you well hydrated. You will remain on this diet for 24 hours or until your surgeon or dietitian advance you. DO NOT TAKE IT UPON YOUR SELF TO ADVANCE YOUR DIET SOONER THAN RECOMMENDED!

Stage 2: Puree Diet (2 wks)

About 24 hours after surgery you will be advanced to the pureed diet. This is the point where you will begin introducing Protein into the diet. The texture of the foods that you will be consuming should be like baby food or mashed potatoes. NO SOLID foods are allowed on this diet. DO NOT EAT ANY solid food DURING THIS STAGE.

During this stage it is important to be sure your food is baby food consistency. No chunks. You will put undo stress on your band and could cause costly damage. You will get to the solid food stage soon enough. At this point healing is key. Good luck! You CAN do this.

I was banded last Wednesday and I have already eaten mashed potatoes, very thin shaved turkey, and I have chewed very very well until it's almost like swallowing liquid. Is this O.K.??? I was feeling so weak that I started eating a little more solid food, but chewing very well.

Ok, I think I finally recognize my warning. I have noticed a slight gurgling sound/feeling in my throat after the last bite.

I was wondering the same thing! I have yet to recognize the fullness signs. I am at 3.5 cc's and sometimes I can get juicy chicken breast down and other days I just can't, despite chewing it up! I have had several incidents where the food would get stuck. It causes major distress and despite drinking something and hearing gurgling sounds, I have to sit straight up and then the "slimming" occurs and then its off to the bathroom to throw it up. But the distress can last for 10 to 15 minutes. It really sucks. Has anyone had a hard time doing the 30/30 rule with drinks? ? I just cant seem to eat without sipping something!!

I don't know about you, but once I get that stuck feeling, drinking actually makes it worse. It was always the first thing to do before banding, but now I am trying to break that habit. I still want to drink while eating, so I have been making sure nothing is within reach.

Just worked this out today. Its not a 'don't take another bite' more a 'dam woman! you took too much'. I get a stabbing pain in the centre of my chest, then it goes right under my right breast and feels like someone has stuck a knife in there. Then I basically have it for about the next hour. Fun, huh?

I think because all of my moments have been from big bite syndrome, all of my signals have been in my throat. I'm not restricted enough for the pain in my chest. I can only hope that I nip this in the bud before I get that restriction. I go for another fill in less than 2 weeks, so I know that is a real possibility.

Ok, what is your hint? What tells you that you had better not take another bite? I had my first PB the other day, but I don't know if I missed my hint. I didn't feel overly full or stuffed or anything. I was trying to eat slow. I just don't know. Help me figure this out?

thank goodness i havent had an episode but i am learning to just stop eating when im not hungry because if i wait until im full to stop, then 10 min later im uncomfortable. not sure about pbing. but there have been times i could feel food try to come up in my throast kinda like a hiccup and im like yep i ate too much i better stop

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
