I can't burp!

Recommended Posts

What is up with not being able to burp? I am having a hard time with this one. I try and try and when I do I get this sharp pain in my back. What could this be?

I also haven't had a bowel movement and I was banded on the 30th, is this normal? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Angie

I am just now able to burp and it really hurts actually. I also just had my first bm since the surgery as well. I don't even know if it would really qualify.

So, it sounds like the time frames aren't much off. All of this happened for me within the last 30 onutes or so. Pretty eventful last hour :D

How are you doing with liquids? I am doing pretty well. I think I drank some too fast, I kind of got a nausea feeling with a little bit of slime.

I couldnt burp for about a month after I got my band. I had to have my DH or DS "burp" me by patting me on the back as I lent forward.

As for the BM, well. You are taking in less food, so there is not as much waste.

I hope that helped a little.

NORMAL! Don't worry, you will burp again. Hubby patting my back helped me, too. And you will get back on schedule with the BM's as well, I promise. Don't do like me and try to fix it, just make sure there isn't something BAD wrong, and as long as it's just a small worry or aggravation, try to wait it out and let your body do it's thing. It was created to make waste...it knows what to do. It will, you will, hang in there!

you most likely still have some swelling. I had the same problem with not being able to burp after surgery. I was told it was from the swelling in my diaphram from surgery when they placed the band.. the air is trapped. I still to this day have a difficult time burping and I am 15 months post op

Angie,

It does get better - we promise. This is commen in this phase.

You may have to force yourself to burp - often.

About the BM's, Jack was right about contacting your surgeon to see what he recommends taking. Since you are so newly banded, you dont want to harm anything.

I could not burp either and it drove me CRAZY. I don't have any good advice on the burping, wish I did. I still get annoyed when I can't burp.

As far as BM, the pain meds do it to me EVERY time and after an awful experience after knee surgery I refused to go at it again without help. My Mom is a nurse and suggested I take mineral oil. It is not a quick fix but can help move things along. I still take it. (almost a month out)

GOOD LUCK!

Let us know how everything goes...well not evreything.

LOL, thanks to everyone. I am doing better. Seems that everything is moving along <cough> Burping will come I am sure. I go to my Doctor on Wednesday and I will talk to him more about it.

Thanks again!

Try some OTC chewable Gas-X They really help alot & the more you walk after eating 2 or 3 the better you'll feel. It took me 3 wks before I had a normal BM. So don't worry at all about that. I exactly 1 month out now & very normal & burp with the best of them (unfortunately ;0))

I am about 4 weeks post surgery but unlike you, I was burping from like day 2 - it is quite embarrasing. Bowel movements took awhile, still aren't back to normal

Jack - you said; ... the peristaltic movement of the lower digestive tract is effectively stopped (temporarily) by this kind of procedure....check with your surgeon to see what he might suggest if it's a problem.... I wasn't aware of that, are you sure? Is this why some folks don't have a normal BM?<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
