I can almost always point to a culprit

thats me too! late-evening alcohol is a BIG trigger for my reflux. So? NO late evening alcohol.

So, for those of us that have reflux symptoms - is this fill the last one for us? I mean, getting another fill - regardless of how tiny it would be - would only make the reflux stronger. So whats the point of ever even attempting getting another fill?

hmmm... being 30 pounds from goal weight vs waking up in the middle of the night with vomit boiling in my throat.... not a hard decision.

Although, I do feel cheated.

Cant imagine how you feel, Sue. :(

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong...but as you lose weight, doesn't a fill generally loosen a bit? Or is that just in the beginning? Or is it one of those..."it just depends" kind of things? Seems like if you lose a bit, your fill loosens, and you have room for a tad bit more fill, then perhaps the reflux won't get any worse? That's what I'm banking on! I hope I'm right and that's true for me...

Legallyblonde, the other reflux thread was locked when it was moved to the Reference section. There's nothing wrong with having more than one thread on the same subject.

Paula, I've wondered about that too. I'm sure my doctor would say yes, that's it. You've reached a physical point where further tightening would just make the reflux worse. C'est tout!

But I do think Kathy is right, and more weight lost would widen that margin. At least, it's a great theory. :( I'm waiting to see if another 10 lbs will change the reflux situation. I agree, being 30 (or 40 or 50) pounds overweight is FAR preferable to having serious reflux every night. I had a very short period of what Legallyblonde is going through, and it is the WORST. The lack of sleep is more debilitating than anything.

Tammy -- Thanks. I tried elevating the head of my bed...no success. Legally blonde, I've also had a Dr.'s office tell me acid reflux was not a side effect of the band. I went to Inamed's web site and looked it up in their patient guide. In Inamed's clinical study, 34 percent reported reflux. So, pull that up and take it to your Dr. next time -- I plan to. What's the world coming to when we're more informed than the Dr.'s??

I posted the below message on the Support Forum, but I think this is a better forum. I could use any and all information you may have to offer. I am frightened and frustrated with the things that are going on with me. I am ready to rip this band out of me. There are a couple of ladies that have stories just like mine and I am hoping we can help each other out. I have had all the Fluid removed from my band.........FRUSTRATED cannot describe my feelings right now. Thank you for any help.

Message #1

I had my surgery in Feb and did very well for first few months. A few times I would eat too much and definitely felt the effects. I did vomit a few times (mucus type substance and some food) but overall was feeling good. I had my first fill after 6 weeks and the weight started coming off. I had my second fill a month later and it was too much restriction. I went in the next day and they removed the Fluid they had just added and everything was fine. Again I was doing well and losing weight. However, about a month and 1/2 ago I started having serious problems. I developed Acid Reflux and continue to suffer nightly from this. I am on Protonix (40mg) TWICE a day and still wake up choking on acid and food I ate. But more seriously, I feel like my stomach is not digesting the food I eat. I vomit almost daily......sometimes all day long. I have spent a couple days in hospital due to dehydration. They removed all the fluid from my band and I have been fluid free for over a month now. I always have a bitter taste in my mouth (acid). Many times at night I vomit food I ate for Breakfast that day. Most days I feel sick all day. Many times when I eat about 10 minutes later my back tenses up and my whole body aches. I am feeling so disappointed with my docs..........when I explained about my back hurting they basically told me that they think I have developed a fear of food and that fear makes me sick and that my body reacts to that fear...........Basically, that it is in my head. I know that there is a problem and I just am hoping someone out there knows what I am talking about. I am at the point where I want to have it removed which just saddens me because I spent so much money paying for the band (my insurance will not even pay for test to help determine what is going on because I chose to have this elective surgery) . I have lost 50 pounds so far and have another 50 to go. However, I have not lost any weight in over a month. I am just so frustrated so if anyone has information, I would really appreciate the support.

Message # 2

Thank you all for your replies. I did do a barium swallow while I was in the hospital and my docs said the band looked good and had not slipped. I have made an appointment with my regular doctor to discuss this since I don't feel like I am getting anywhere with my docs. I am hoping I can get my insurance to pay for it, but that is not looking good. DISHDIVA, did your reflux go away when all your fluid was removed? How are you doing now, did you have fluid replaced?

Another thing I didn't mention that I find strange. Certain foods that I ate after I was banded now make me sick almost immediately. eggs, ground beef are examples. I could eat them before, but now I eat them and it feels like they sit in my stomach all day long........it irritates my stomach intensely and that is when my back feels like it is tensed up. I end up vomitting that food hours and hours later. It just seems like the food is not being digested. I know my port came partially loose and does not lie flat now, but the docs don't seem concerned about this at all.

Thanks again for your replies!!

Sonnie, it really does sound like there is something odd going on with your stomach. I've heard of some bandsters suffering from decreased esophageal motility, which would account for food staying in your esophagus/pouch for hours on end. Have they considered that? In any event, if a complete unfill is not solving your problems, perhaps it does need to be removed. :(

Sonnie,

((hugs))

Have you tried going to another band surgeon to find answers?

And as simple as this may sound, have you "tested" yourself by going on a liquid diet for a couple of days to give your digestive system a break? Just to allow the swelling to decrease. Try giving yourself a fresh start.

Also, when I eat a hard protien I MUST drink Water (at least) an hour later to help wash that food out of my pouch.

One last thing...

my *new* insurance comp. (this is not the one that payed for my band) does not cover banding. B U T - if I have test run and do NOT approach it as "band related problems" but approach it as "stomach problems" - the insurance WILL... I repeat, THEY WILL pay for the testing!

Dishdiva,

I agree and disagree!

DEFINATELY make your surgeons aware of the reflux stats. Great idea!

On the other hand, remember - physicians are people with educated opinions.... they are not God (although some think they are :( )

Went to TJ yesterday and had my fill lightened. I had 2.4cc and they took out .4cc. So I have 2cc. The dr was super nice and I had a very nice experience. I ate well yesterday and slept great last night. The lack of sleep was effecting my mental health. I was seriously doing/thinking crazy stuff.

I asked why the other doctor told me some weird story about how they take a part of of stomach (like some kind of acid branch) and anchor it around your band which prevents acid reflux. I swear! Her words not mine! And the Dr just stared at me and said, "What?" So, whos to say? Like I said before, I work in the medical field, I know anotomy and I know of no little branch off my stomach.

P.S I just wanted to say that I travel to Mexico by myself and if there is anyone who questions their safety, yeah, question your safety, but don't let that stop you from going on your own. I got stopped at the border coming back and searched but I think it is only because I looked tired and was clutching my new Coach purse for dear life.

Thank you Paula for all the nice words. How sweet you are.

Christine

Forgot to say I was proud to learn I have lost a total of 35lbs since November. Down another 1 lbs today so 36lbs gone. Started at a size 16 and was a 12 for a minute and now need to figure out what comes before a size 12? 10? I wouldn't know since I went from kids sizes to a size 14. Ha! Clothes baggy is a good feeling.

I tell you, now that my head is clear....if anyone is suffering from reflux, get help! Life wasn't worth living like that.

It was so neat to speak to other band people in the waiting room. I don't get a chance to get personal feedback from anyone around here.

Christine

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
