HELP! When can I sleep 'normal' again?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I was banded 9/30...since then I can only sleep (If you want to call it that) in the recliner on my back...When will I be able to sleep in my own bed again? :confused:When will I be able to sleep on my side again?

Is this all normal, or is it just me? I have back issues, so it's really irritating to me...

THANK YOU! I just want to rest... I need to rest! :blink:My husband has been amazing sleeping out on the couch next to me, but neither one of us are resting. We also have a 2yr old, I'm not doing so well with this crappy sleep thing.

THANKS GUYS!

I didn't sleep on my side for 2 weeks. I did, however sleep in my bed every night following surgery, but I had to have help to get out of bed for at least 4 or 5 days. I didn't bounce back as well as many do, but I am doing great now.

I can completely identify with you because we were banded on the same day. Congratulations. I haven't sleep right either. I am sleeping in my bed though. I have about four pillow under my head and 2 under my back ...not to mention the ones on the side. I think the key po healing is movement. I have tried to walk alot around the house. Not to much though. (your body will tell you). My back is still killing me but it gets better each day.

I slept in the recliner for the first three nights following my surgery. After that, I was able to sleep in my bed. However, it was a good two weeks before I was able to comfortably sleep on my side and at least two months before I was able to sleep on my tummy again.

I can relate with you as well as all the others....I"m a side and tummy sleeper and was so upset that I wasn't able to sleep well in the beginning. But at night 10 post-surgery, I was able to sleep on my side and tummy again. Before that, I always started out in my bed but then wasn't sleeping well, was restless, and got up and slept sitting up on the couch a few hours before returning to bed. When in bed, I also used lots of pillows and had one of my big dining room chairs next to my bed to help me pull myself up so I didn't have to keep waking up dear hubby for help getting out of bed. I know it's a tough time but you WILL be slepping your ususal way soon. Good luck to you and congrats on your surgery!

Right up to your sleeping on night 10, you could have been describing me. I am on day 10 and tried to sleep in my bed last night. I cannot sleep on my back because of this feeling of pulling something. Nor can I sleep on my side for the same reasons. I haven't even attempted to turn onto my tummy. When I tried to get up from that position...OMG that hurt! I had to slide around like a VERY pregnant woman to get up without feeling like I was tearing my port out of place. I know it will get better for all of us, but my goodness I wish that I knew when. I don't even HAVE a recliner. Instead I have this really uncomfortable queen Anne type chair with an oversized ottoman from another chair. That other chair would have been perfect for sleeping but it is so huge that we couldn't move it to a room big enough for both the chair and ottoman.

Thank You so much for asking this question! I was banded on 9/30 as well and have slept on the couch, because I can not get out of my bed! I'm happy to read the comments that it's gets better. I can't wait!

I slept in my bed from the first night. Honestly, I used pillows to prop me up and cushion my surgical sites, took the pain med nite #2 and slept on my tummy. I know this sounds wild but I think it helped keep me from getting adhesions where my surgical sites healed. Can you try a pain med and some spare pillows around your torso?

I have learned that what you are going through is COMPLETELY Normal for many people. I slept in a sitting position on my couch with my feet on a foot stool for 3 WEEKS! I had a light desk job that I returned to in 3 WEEKS but I was STILL sore then. I could not have done harder work even then. I was worried for a while because I just was taking so much longer than so many other people on the board----and I'm no baby----I was just plain weak and very sore. I was SURE something was wrong. Nothing was wrong! I just needed more time. If you are worried about something talk to your MD's nurse. Part of all that money you're paying them is for good post-op care. Don't feel bad about making them earn that huge surg and post-op fee. They have seen it all and they can reassure you---or if something doesn't sound right --they'll have you go in. Don't worry.

I was banded on Oct 2 and I slept in the recliner for the first two nights. I slept in my bed last night, I took my lortab and made sure I had pillows for my side. My bed is a sleep number bed and I lowered the number to help support me better. I actually slept on my left side with a pillow propped under me for support and it felt ok. Not great, but better than the recliner. I doubt I'll sleep on my stomach for at least a few weeks! :)

Everyone is different! Listen to your own body and you'll get through it.

I was banded 10/1 and still cannot sleep on my side either. We too have uncomfortable furniture (no recliner) . Hubby took me to Bed, Bath and Beyond and we got a wedge pillow. That helps tremendously as far as comfort goes. I tried last night on my side and it was a big NO. Hubby had to help me up and fix the pillow back.

"My bed is a sleep number bed and I lowered the number to help support me better."

Thanks for that tip. We have a sleep number bed as well. I turned the bed up...I will turn it down tonight and see if that helps.

I am so sore from the bed, the couch, the chair. I know I need to see the chiropractor but at this stage he probably can't help me much.

I was banded 9/23. Last night was the first night I could sleep on my side. It still wasn't 100% comfortable but I was so tired of sleeping on my back. I look forward to the day I can sleep on my tummy. I love sleep way to much to be uncomfortable.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
