Hick-ups? As opposed to Hick-downs? (Sorry, I live in Missouri, can't help but have the association). I have hiccups more frequently post-op than pre, but they're different. I most often get them when I'm "stuck", in combination with the gurgling and burping. They also tend to be... how can I describe this... more "shallow" than pre-op hiccups. As in, they're tiny little "hic... hic... hics" than the deep "hiiiiiiiiiiiiiic" I had pre-op. And oh, for me a "hicburp" means that something stuck has just flushed through and I'm clear. Always.

I too get the hiccups more frequently after surgery. It is after I eat, and I am not sure if it has to do something with the air that I have swallowed. They don't hurt now, but they did the first few days post op, they are very annoying. And I used to drink Water to get rid of them but now you cannot drink after you meals so I sometimes hold my breath and they go away weird huh

I never used to hiccup, but since getting my band I do. In fact, that is my stop sign. If I start to hiccup, I better quit eating immediately or I am going to have problems.

Hello,

I get the hickups too. I finally asked the nurse about them. She said that I was eating too fast and or not chewing my food well enough. Since then I have slowed down on the eating and it has helped alot.

Ive been getting these for the past week every now and again. I have taken it as my body's way of telling me to slow down and chew better. So, when they kick in...i stop eating and do something else for a bit, then finish my meal.

but, they do feel uncomfortable. however, a few days back, i experienced what i assume is "stuck." i ate something rather quickly and felt pressure in my chest...so i took a drink of juice to wash it down. LOL. it didnt wash it, but topped it off, and the pressure got so strong that i felt like i could barely breathe.

after that experience, which i hope to never repeat (it was scary!), hiccups provide ample warning to just put the silverware down!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
