Trying To Figure Out If the Band is First or Port

Recommended Posts

I'm a little confused about port/band location.

I was told prior to surgery that my port would be located right in the center under the breast bone. (think of breast and down 4 inches right in middle)

I do have a big incision there so I assume that's where it's at. So is the band above that or below that? They must be really close together?

Also, I was told I have the realize band. That must have been a last minute decision because prior to surgery it was the lap band.

Anyways, just curious. (I tried doing a google picture search for how it might look but no luck)

Hi Sandra:

My port is under the biggest incision. It sounds like your port and mine are in the same place. I might be wrong, but I believe that the band is down inside deeper and a bit higher than your port at the end of your esophogus. They probably are close together, but your port is near your skin and the band is a few inches deeper.

Good luck with your band. I hope you grow (shrink, really) to love yours like I love my belly cop.

The port is stitched on the inner dise of your abdomen muscle. The band is stiched between the top of your stomach and esophagus. You should be able to feel your port if you tighten your abs. Lay down on your back and do like a crunch. Thats how they will do your fills. i have the lap band, so it could be a bit different. You should still be able to feel where your port is. Thats how the doctors will feel it too. The band should probably be in the same place regardless if it is a realize band or lap band.

I appreciate the responses.

I definitely can feel the port so I know where that's at.

As far as watching the video- no thanks. lol

I told my dr. that I've researched this for two years now and I didn't need to see details. lol I do much better without video details.

I pretty much knew by pictures how it works but I was a little thrown off about the band and port being so close in my case.

I've seen a lot of people have the port way down on their right or left side. I think I like having mine in the middle.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
