Just thought I'd give a word of advice to all of you banders that are still on your 2 week post-op diet. OK, so my adorable husband fixed his famous beef stew over the weekend. We kept out some of the broth from it and I have been eating (sipping) on it for the past couple days.

About 45 minutes ago, my stomach started growling so bad I was about to go crazy. So, I get up and warm me up some of the broth from the stew. I thought it would be ok if I put some crackers in it to make it a little thicker so it would stay with me longer. WARNING: DON NOT DO THIS. MY STOMACH IS HURTING RIGHT NOW AND I KNOW IT HAS TO BE BECAUSE I WENT AGAINST WHAT I WAS TOLD AND PUT CRACKERS IN MY BROTH. It is so not worth the pain I am having right now. Just stick to the diet the Doctors actually know what they are talking about.

I am so sorry that you are hurting. Hang in there, we are all going to learn some things the hard way. Saying no to food is not something any of us are good at or we wouldn't be here.

I dont think you can generalize, some people have trouble with soft bread and some dont. So far there isnt anything I have had trouble with and Iv even had a fill (waste of my time and money). Other than once with some cantelope, I can eat anything. I was having part of a subway sub into my 3rd week after surgery, and I waited only because I was told to, I know I could have eaten it a lot sooner.

Flowers, she stated that she is still on the 2 week post-op liquid diet! She is not to have anything other than liquids! It sounds like you are further along than that. Especially if you've already gone for a fill (I'm sorry your first fill didn't work for you :tt1: ). I'm so glad you didn't eat the sandwich sooner although you felt you could have. It's so important to follow the surgeon's guidelines.

This stage before the first fill is for healing ONLY! NOT losing weight. Once we've healed and start getting fills THEN we can start worrying about losing some of these pounds we're hauling around.

Unfortunately, I'm continuing on my shake diet for the 2 weeks after surgery (had to do them for 10 days before surgery). Although being only just banded on Monday, the shakes are fine right now. Come next week, I might change my mind!

Flowers, I hope your next fill is better for you. I've heard that it can sometimes take awhile for the fills to start working. Sometime 4 or 5 before restriction happens. Hang in there!

Sassymama, thanks for the warning. Crackers seem so benign. I'm hoping you feel better soon. Take care. And no more crackers!! ;)

I can sympathize! I was banded 9 days ago and the other day we were out shopping and stopped for lunch. I decided to try the broth from cream of potato Soup and I thought I was going to die! I felt full, bloated, gassy and just plain sick. Went back to CLEAR broths for now.

Everyone is different but listen to your doctor and your body and you will do ok.

Sounds like you are yelling at me because I said everyone is different.

I didnt have a pre-opt diet even though on my own I lost 9 lbs. I also was not on liquids for 2 weeks. I was on liquids for 3 days after my surgery. I started mushys like chicken salad 3 days after my surgery. My doctors orders and I had no trouble. My doctor actually said try them and see how you react.

I was just saying you cant generalize, every doctor allows something different. I was eating food like she said 3 days after surgery, if she meant putting the crackers into the Soup so they were mushy. I did wait as I said until 3 1/2 weeks to do real food, only a few days early.

Some people dont swell up like others, some have more pain and my post op diet was liquids for 3 days and then mushys, so I was allowed crackers in soup way before 2 weeks by my doctors orders. You really cant generalize what everyone can and cant do or what they were allowed as a post op diet. There are also some who have a prefill during surgery so they have to be more carefull afterwards than others, its all different for each person.

I agree everyone is different. I had no pre-opt diet AT ALL. I was eating food the day I came home. Granted it was different then before I went in but there were no limitations put on me. I had no pain or problems.

This was just me * ALWAYS listen to YOUR doctor!*

I don't see where I was yelling. The only all-caps I used were for certain words for emphasis. I realize we are all different. Sassymama was talking about her experience. She wasn't generalizing except to say that if our post-ops said only liquids and what types then that is what we should do b/c this is what happened to her. She specifically states that her post is for those of us on a 2 week liquids diet. That's not generalizing except to make a note for those of us following a similar diet.

The only reason I even mentioned my pre-op is b/c it happens to be the same as my 2 week post-op diet. Just a clarification thing.

I think it's great you lost 9lbs before surgery! I had been losing through the program Kaiser requires but the surgeon requires the pre-op shake thing as extra insurance for the liver being small enough. I have heard of surgeon's not requiring anything.

Question for you. When did you get hungry? I'm so not hungry right now. I have to do my 2 oz of shakes on the clock or I forget about it. I'm hoping I don't get hungry for awhile but I also know everyone is different in that as well. Just wondering how it worked for you. Thanks!

I do apologize if you took my post wrong. That wasn't my intention. It's hard when it's all words and no facial expressions! Maybe I should start using the little faces below more often! :cursing:

Take care!

I feel like Im hungry a lot, so I have a SF popsicle or something. I do hear once we get filled to our sweet spot the desire to snack will dim. I hope so. (man I hope it gets easier lol)

I am telling myself there is no time limit, so it doesnt matter if I lose like a turtle or lose fast, as long as I get to the finish line. We have a saying on my cruise chat board where some of us are trying to lose, "one day, one pound at a time". I need to take that to heart. Im too impatient with everything.

sorry, I didnt mean anything by my post either, just frustrated, want the pounds to come off faster.

To those of you just starting out, use the phrase "just because I can doesn't mean I should". Just because you can eat a lot or eat something you were told you shouldn't doesn't mean that you should eat it. You can still practice eating like a bandster and begin loosing weight now. It's harder, I'll give you that but it does put you that much farther ahead of the game.

I couldn't say what dimmed my desire for junk food. The band dims the desire to eat between meals and I think that just weaning myself from the sweets made it where my body adjusted to wanting the good stuff. No, I'm not perfect. I don't want to be. However, when you can only eat a small amount you learn what works the best. Dense Protein keeps you full faster without having to cut the circulation off in your stomach. Carbs don't last a long time and you'll be hungry sooner.

Absolutely do whatever your doctor says. I don't know why they are all different but they are. It's always good to error on the side of healing. I wasn't hungry for about 2 weeks after surgery. Just goes to show you how different we all are.

Heartfire - good to see you're doing well.

Vicki

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
