Who are you telling?

Recommended Posts

The exact reason I don't tell many.

Most it is the lie of "The easy way out."

The only exception to that is my mother. I didn't tell her because (1) she has very loose lips and would tell everyone... and (2) she would be too all up in my business as to how I could pay for it. I don't want her to be questioning my finances.

:smile2:Initially, I only told my sister-in-law as she was with me during another procedure in which my doctor really expressed concern about my weight. About a month after I had attended the inital meetings required by the surgery group, I told my 2 oldest friends. Their support and encouragement was great! I told a few friends at work and my boss because I was asking for alot of time off to attend the required medical appointments for pre-op. What surprised me the most was when I told my hairdresser! Her support has been fantastic. I finally told one of my sisters and she has been very supportive and is encouraging me to tell my dad. I'm not sure about that; I'm afraid his wife will be nagging me quite a bit and make comments that I will have to bite my tongue not to be rude or obnoxious. I have found that the folks I've told have been really, really supportive and I'm really grateful for this!

My partner has started the "you won't be able to have that after" route. Sure I won't be able to have the fizzies, but I will be able to have ice cream sheesh. Not straight away and not much, but I will be able to have it occasionally. I just don't want him to start monitoring everything I eat.

I have told my hubby, my sister and brother and my two children and of course my best friend. I really didnt want anyone else to know I have a very critical extended family and I have been the only one who is overweight.

Now I am equal to them all!!!

I now have a quiet confidence that I never had in my entire life.

I understand. I think it is great that you have chosen to take this big step. That's what is important...not everone knowing your business! I'm right there with you! I have told my best friend (just 2 weeks ago.) I think she is jealous, but I don't think she would even qualify for wls which is good for her. I don't regret my decision to keep it a secret. You can always change your mind and tell more people, but once people know it is immposible to change that!

I haven't told anyone at work outside of the two original folks.... I have wanted to tell so many times, especially since I am getting plenty of questions regarding weight loss during the day; I am doing a whole lot more walking for exercise thru the facility (instead of sitting 80% of th day).

My family & friends of the family know. I hope to keep it that way.

It is amazing how many people have found out about my surgery without my telling anyone. At Christmas Breakfast, my sister - in-law's father says I know this is hush, hush, but how is your weight loss coming. Boy was I floored. I politely answered but quickly changed the subjet. Later that night, I was at a party and someone I see maybe 1-2 times a year says I hear you had the lap band surgery, how's it going? This was in a room full of people I didn't even know. Later that evening, the same person corners me and starts talking about the surgery and my father (who I hadn't told) was in the same room. Man, was I angry! I knew then that I had to tell him because had saw this individual more fequently than I did. I had to confront my sister-in-law and brother and then had to go tell my father and his wife. I did this several weeks after the holidays because it took me awhile to get over my anger. I felt so violated; my sharing personal things about myself is a real biggie.

I have to say that I was contacted by my doctor's office last week and told that the General Assembly is considering removing bariatric surgery from state employees health care package. I got on the internet and contacted those few folks that I have told and asked them to contact the appropriate legislators. In my request, I found that I really revealed alot about what has happened since the surgery so they could include that information in their letters. When I wrote my letter to the legislators, I amazed myself at what I said and how much I revealed. I found it really easy to share the information. Maybe because they are strangers or because of the out-of pocket expenses that I'll have to pay (which I can not afford) and may alter my course of treatment.

I must say, I felt very supported. Most of the folks I contacted, did contact at least one legislator. Some contacted all 10!

I still don't want a whole lot of people to know; it really is a personal thing to me. I do love the gall bladder surgery comment!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
