manometry -- could it preclude band surgery?

Recommended Posts

My Aug. 12th band surgery was cancelled because my upper GI test showed a hiatal hernia and a problem with my esophagus. For the latter, I will meet with a GI specialist tomorrow for a consultation to get a manometry. My band doctor said he could fix the hiatal hernia, but the two together made him want to do more testing before the surgery. My reflux is successfully treated with Nexium and has been for a long time. I have no symptoms. I am so afraid that I won't be able to have the LapBand surgery. Does anyone know anything about this?

My sister just had that done! Said it was alot easier than she thought it would be. She is trying to qualify for lap-band, too. She hasn't heard the results yet (had it done last Tues thru Weds). THEN she has to have some sort of MRI or CAT and then swallow some kind of pill that has a camera in it. All because of the esophagus and her Iron count is low and they're trying to figure it all out before the surgery.

Please keep me posted about your sister. My age may have something to do with the esophageal problem. I'm 63. I hope that your sister is able to get the lapband surgery that she wants. I hope I do too!

I sure will! She is 58 and has had a long history of problems with her esophagus (terrible chest pains). I got banded on 7-28 and he fixed a hiatal hernia that I had no clue even existed (no reflux, but I did hiccup alot!). I'll keep you posted. Good luck to you!

I'm kind of new, but I think it just means to keep each other's name (ie, KathrynH) in the "friends" area so we can find each other easier and send a message! That way we can keep each other updated. You don't have to, it's just the only way I know how.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
