Recovery time with strenuous job.

Recommended Posts

As I consider the lap band, I am wondering about recovery time. I am a firefighter/paramedic, and strenuous lifting/bending is part of my job description. Am I doomed to weeks and weeks out of work?

I'm an R.N. in a hospital. I took 2 weeks off work before going back, just to be on safe side. Laproscopic surgery, generally, doesn't require much time off work, as less muscles and tissue are damaged as with open surgeries. With lapband, they are not removing anything, just adding something, so healing is very quick, for most people.

Thank you for your helpful reply. Do (did) you do a lot of patient lifting?

The info I have read is that people who do a lot of physical labor should take 3 weeks to recover. At my two week post op appointment my doctor said there was no restriction on how much I could lift. On the third week I was lifting printers and computers with no problem, and like normal don't lift anything more than one person can handle. But, I'm not doing it all day long like you would be.

Thanks! Three weeks is better than four, or five, or six, I guess... but either way I'd have to go on short-term disability, which is 65 percent of my salary, so I was curious ... thanks!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
