Important Questions for your Doctor

Recommended Posts

I have my consultation tomorrow, and have been taking notes from the website, but I would like to know of any questions you think are important to ask the doctor before your surgery.

Thanks so much for any help you can provide-

These are some of the questions that I have gotten from reading different posts on this site:

1. Does he put a fill in when he puts the band in? (some do and some don't)

2. Are you able to take ibuprofin (sp?) after surgery?

3. Is there any kind of liquid diet right before the surgery? I have read here many people having to do that and my surgeon said no as long as I was following the diet given to me by my nutritionist.

4. I personally asked about post surgery vomiting because it has been a problem for me in the past.

I can't really think of anything else but write your questions down before you go in because you always think you will remember and then you forget! :mad2:

I hope that was helpful. Good luck!

Ask if he does the fills or if that is handled by someone else. If it is someone else, I would make sure I met with them and really liked them. I saw my surgeon for a 15-20 minute visit on my intro day. They say I talked to him in the operating room but I don't remember it, and I haven't seen him since. I had never met the woman who does my fills and I have heard horror stories about how snotty some people's fill nurses or PA's can be. Mine is a dream and I couldn't ask for better but it would have been nice to know I was never going to see my surgeon again. Also, who do you call for questions.....the surgeon, the coordinator, the dietician, the fill office....and who is next in line if you don't get satisfaction there.

You don't think there will be problems but I was always calling my coordinator with questions that would have been better addressed by someone else.

Who do you call if there is a problem with a fill and the clinic is closed? Is there always a bariatric person on call? Things like that.

Good luck with your appointment.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
