HELP! I have a fatty liver/any tips or tricks?

Recommended Posts

I had my 1st lap band surgery on 8/11 and much to my chagrin and dismay, my liver was too thick for the doc to properly place the band. He has me (again) on a diet to shrink my liver (which I have learned to follow to the letter this time, as I said, shame on me) and will try again on 8/29.

Besides doing what he's said to do (2 - 3 Protein Shakes a day, 3 oz lean chicken turkey or fish, 1 cup green veggies no oil, and at least 64 ounces of Water daily) does anyone know of anything else I can do to make sure that sucker shrinks some?

Exercise? Anyone have any tips?

Thanks...

Check with your doctor. My husand had a fatty liver and was reading Prevention magazine, and they had an article about "Milk thistle" that you can take it and it helps de fat livers. After being on it a few months and having a let fat and carb diet , but not a real strict one, he went back and had a liver test and his liver was almost completely clear, very little fat, the doctor was very surprises, I brought the article from Prevention and he was going to look into it.

But check with you doctor first before trying it.

Thanks shamrockgirl! But I need something that will work in 2 weeks; my surgeon rescheduled me for 8/29. I am doing what he has told me to, TO THE LETTER this time! LOL but wanted to know of any other tips or hints. He's got me on an almost no-carb diet for 2 1/2 weeks, plus exercise, and I guess thinks that will shrink it enough. I HOPE so!

I just found out I had a fatty liver today. My doc has said low-carb diet now for 2 weeks with no dairy (sigh) then I'll be on liquids for 2 weeks before surgery.

I'm a little nervous about this, but hopefully all will be OK.

PaisleyDaisy all I can tell you is to do what your doc says! scrupulously! I lost 15 pounds during the 1st 3-week diet but had some low fat cheese, had pizza once, etc and essentially used his directions as a "guideline"...to my shame and chagrin! This has been a good lesson and I'll remember it postop too...just do what your doc says and I'm sure you'll do fine!

Thanks! Between you and shamrockgirl...I may just give milkthistle a try. If it won't hurt me, it can maybe help!

I would check with the surgeon before taking Milk Thistle. My doctor gave me a list of meds not to take 10 days before surgery and said to check about herbs to see if they were safe to take. Many things will thin the blood and cancel a surgery.

My surgeon has me doing Medi-Fast for 2 weeks prior to surgery. This is what he has his patients on and has not had a problem as long as patient takes as prescribed.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
