Banded 07/02...Waiting for my first fill... and HUNGRY!!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 07/02 and have yet to have my first fill. I have been back on 'regular' food and I'm past all the mushie and soft stages. I have no restriction and can eat the way I did before I had the band and I'm convinced over this past 4-5 weeks I've lost maybe 5 pounds. I know that becasue I was told by my doc that I could start pureed food, and bump it of to mushies the week after, and soft food the week after that... etc... I know I have not lost much at all, and it's making me sad and upset.

I am so hungry and it is taking every ounce of will power that I have to not pig out... I am trying my best to eat healty and not cheat but, I have that old demon voice in the back of my head ... I'm trying to be strong and it's not easy. I have to admit I did cheat last night with some pizza and I had a way too cheesey omlet from IHOP over the weekend... I know, please save the lectures... I'm well aware that what I did was totally wrong...

Not to mention I'm concerned that my doc bumped up my diet so quickly, I've been reading what other doctors have done and I'm totally shocked that I was really only on all liquids for only one week...

Anybody else feeling this way???? Please help...

I was banded on 7/16 and am feeling the same way. I'm still on mushies but I pretty much have the same appetite I did before the surgery and it's killing me to not pig out. There are plenty of "mushy" foods that I am craving and wanting to eat in large quantities and like you, it's taking everything I've got to control myself!! I go on the 13th for my first fill and I'm praying it makes a difference!!!!!

I go 08/14 for my first fill and I literally can't wait.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one going through this. Thanks for the reply Andrea.

no lecture here, however you probably should start some habits that can help your success. i did not get restriction till 7 fills after 5 months - it may be less, or could be more & just because you can eat something, doesn't mean you should.

start journaling your food, start an exercise program - there are many threads for both here on LBT. till you get your restriction to where your eating the correct amts for weightloss (1-2lbs per wk), you'll have to play around with your food & calories & get some will power in place. that's not to say forget pizza again - cause i could never do that; but just get a focused mind in place, rather than set yourself up for failure.

good luck to you both~

Hi there! I was banded 7/2 as well, had my first fill last monday, felt restriction for a few days, but am back to being starving. I haven't gone off the program yet that the doctor suggests, and in fact only just recently started transitioning from mushies to chewies. I love chewing! That being said, I am convinced I need another fill. Even with chewie food, I get hungry and that leads to painful gas. I know everyone is different. Be patient with yourself and your new tummy. I just keep reminding myself that some day my band will perform as it is supposed to and my hard work and perserverence will be all worth it. As it is, no matter how hard I work, I have GAINED 4 pounds in the last week, with no other explanation. Patience and belief... that is what I need!! Good luck and good work all!

I was also banded on 7/2 and completely understand where you're coming from. I still have a little restriction, but not much. My problem is getting hungry very quickly after eating.

Yes, the swelling goes down eventually after surgery and that's why it seems like you may have temporary restriction before your first fill. I get filled on 8/15 and would love to have it sooner. I have only lost 3 lbs since my 2 week check-up. How depressing. I know mentally that this is not suppose to be fast and that anything within the first six weeks is a bonus, but emotionally I'm expecting more. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to keep in touch with one of your 7/2 fellow bandsters! :tt2:

going in on monday @ 2pm cannot wait to get filled although from reading all these blogs it seems as though it may take a couple of fills before restriction is really good. i am straving all the time though. i have lost a total of 14 lbs. i was really sick though after surgery and couldnt eat anything for about a week, only gatorade so that's how i lost so quickly, otherwise i have only lost about 1-2 beyond that in the last couple of weeks. i'll let you know how my fill was after i get it on monday whats your email address? mine is patunia00@msn.com

I am so glad to see that I'm not the only one starving. I was banded July 31st and I was eating mushies the first week because I was starving. I can eat normally right now with no problems, but I'm not eating bread. Seems like the Soups just stay with me an hour. I'm not trying to eat bad things, just trying to eat something that will stick with me for a while and I'm only 11 days after banding. Kinda crazy I know, but at least I'm not the only one going thru this. I go for my check up on the 7th. I'm just hoping i get a fill soon or I'm going to weigh more after banding than I did before.

I also had my surgery 7-2-08 and I had my first fill today. I was also astonished that I had lost 27 pounds since my post op appt-a week before my surgery-amazing. I was starting to get hungary a few days ago but made up my mind to stick with it the best I can. I hope I can continue on this path-I started at 239 and I am now 212 and I feel so much better. The problem is I am losing it in my face, chest, legs, rear-but still have the big fat belly. Eventually it will have to come off there also-I hope.

My doc waits 8 weeks post op to do the first fill. I was like you, very hungry and kind of worried about weight gain. Hang in there. You really do need the healing time before your first fill. It will come soon enough!! I had my first fill last Thursday and WOW! I already have restriction. So, hang in there.

My doc started to give me 3.6cc's and then we did the swallow test. I couldn't swallow all of it, it sat there on the back of my throat, so my doc took out 1 cc. It was weird, after he took out the 1 cc, it instantly went down. So, I have 3.5 cc's. Next appt. is last week of Sept. He said 3.6cc's is the standard amount he gives everyone on their 1st fill...but as we know, everyone is different.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
