Help, my cut near my port opened up!

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 7/15/08 and the cut over my port was closed with invisible stitches liquid. Well, looks like the left end didn't go shut and its had a scab on it. At my 1 week appt the surgeon saw it and said thats ok, it's just scabbed. Well an hour ago the scab fell off and an inch long clear string is hanging out. All I can figure is that I have internal stitches maybe around the port and it's hanging out. Its 2 am and I can't sleep. I called the on call doctor and he said the surgeon is out of town and it definitely isn't right, but don't cut it and cover it with a bandage so it doesn't get snagged, and call the surgeons office in the AM and another on call doctor will know what to do. That this was definitely not life threatening.

Well, I figured that much. But I can't sleep because now I'm freaked that the stitches holding my port down are coming unraveled and thats whats sticking out and now they will have to go in and fix it. Anyone experience anything like this?

I had to update this thread in hopes to help someone else from a sleepless worried night like I just went through. I see 100 members read it and not one response! Talk about a scare I barley slept 4 hours last night. I can't be the only lapbander this happened to. (Tomorrow I'm 3 weeks post - opt.)

Ok, I just got back from seeing my surgeons partner. He looked at it and said the left end of the cut never closed up because on the inside of your stomach they do dissolving stitches and then tie the ends. The end of the cut was not able to close because my body didn't tolerate where he tied the knot. The knot came loose and it unraveled. The doctor was going to cut it off, but held it with the tweezers and it came right out. He said everything was fine now and this was normal and everything looked good.

I'm really sorry that you had to deal with this in the middle of the night! How scary! I'm sure no one responded b/c they had no idea how to help you! I sure as heck don't know what to say about it, except to call the on-duty dr and you already did that! I'm glad it seems resolved. I hope it continues to heal well. And don't be like I would probably be and keep staring at the dumb thing to see if it's changed at all!!!

Take care!!

I had one that didn't close all the way and started bleeding! Then a few weeks later, I did have the invisible thread coming out..

I'm sorry I wasn't online then.. :cool2:

I've been on here in the middle of the night too...

Huggles, LOTS!

Thank You!!!!! I thank you a 1000xs. I was just banded 3/9/12. I was panicking until I read this. I go for my first fill 4/16/12. So I guess he should see it then. Once again, thank you!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
