Recommended Posts

and this has me worried, I don't have a fever bout my throat is sore and irritated... I'm popping Vitamin C (1,000 mg) in the hopes that that and rest will have it clear up in time. but you think they'll still do surgery if there's nothing in my lungs and I dont have a fever?

Hi,

I have my surgery on the 5th of August, and got a sore throat a couple of days ago as well. It's my understanding that the anaethetist will decide whether or not you can have the surgery, because you have to be intubated. I'm a bit worried too, although the sore throat is going away now. My husband made up an old German recipe, and seriously it has worked wonders. Chop up a whole bunch of onions (well maybe 2 or 3), and add some Kandis sugar - these are the big crystals of sugar. If you don't have that, then use regular sugar I guess (the bigger the granules the better). The sugar will melt over the course of the day and will draw the moisture out of the onion, and leave you with a sweet, foul tasting "drink." A couple of tablespoons of that, and it will really help, I promise. I didn't believe it either! let me know how you are doing!

Really? my only worry is that it has sugar in it.. and I've been told no sugar on the pre-op diet.. is there really a high amount of sugar in what you have to drink for it to help?

I had the beginning of a sinus infection (didn't know it at the time, thought it was just a fever) the day before my surgery. I called the doctor's office and they said as long as it stayed as a low-grade fever they would do the surgery. The anesthesiologist is the one that decided whether they would continue and do the surgery. When they took my temp is was 99.0 and I was cleared for surgery!!

Call your doctor's office and let them know -- ask them their opinion and rest!!!

You might try gargling with salt Water before taking any cold meds, Zicam or anything else without checking with your surgeon. Many products will cause you not to be eligible for surgery if taken within 10 days of the surgery. Hope you feel better soon!

I'm three days from starting my two week Optifast and have woken up with a slightly stuffed nose (nothing else). So just to be safe and knowing that I can't take any meds while doing the Optifast, I ran out to Walmart and got some liquid Echinacea. You put 15 drops in Water and take 3 times a day and I swear it boosts your immune system and works! After all this preparation and getting ready (I am flying to Toronto to have it done on the 21st) the last thing I want is to get sick. Best of luck to you.

Yes, there is quite a high sugar content, but I only had about 2 teaspoons of the stuff, and decided it was worth it! Looks like there are lots of good ideas on here - good luck!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
