why arent I losing weight?

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

I could do with some advice please!

its been 4 wks since I was banded. I had a very good restriction initially and lost 11 pounds. The last 2 weeks I have been able to eat a fair bit more (still smaller portions than pre band) and although I am being very , careful and sensible with my food choices and exercising regularly I havnt lost any more at all. I dont understand why. I would say that I'm probably consuming around 1300 cals or less a day so i really woulod have thought I'd be losing slowly but steadily.

Do you think that when i get my 1st fill this week it will make a difference? I'd really like a good restriction coz at the mo it feels like the bands not there.

the dr.'s dont expect you to actually lose weight before your first fill so anything you lose pre fill is considered an extra.

you will def lose when you get your first fill.

i remember the first 6-8 weeks and it was hell. i was still hungry and i had to do all the work (not much help from the band).

my suggestion would be to write down what you eat (or use dailyplate.com) and change it. i would eat less and just suffer through it because i promise it will get better. a typical day for me then was:

b: 1/2 cup yogurt or oatmeal OR Protein Shake with 1 teaspoon Peanut Butter (skim milk)

l: tuna, chicken, or egg salad with 2 tablespoons of mayo (1/2 cup)--i ate it without bread OR deli meat rolled up with a piece of cheese

d: Protein based meal (1/2 cup total). After 6 weeks i was allowed to eat a cup at a time.

Good Luck!

I hate to be the barrer of bad news but you may not lose steadily until after a few fills. I am on my 3rd and I still do not have real good restriction. It's sooooo different for everyone. Some get restrction with only a little saline and others have to get fill after fill. There is just no exact science to this thing.

Your body is still adapting to this new "thing" inside you. My Dr told me that he didn't care if I lost anything for the first 6 weeks. Eat only what you are comfortable eating. By no means should you starve yourself. The fills definitely help you to lose. I've had 8 fills and am at 6.8cc in my band. I have never approached this as a diet. Diets don't work for me. I eat what I want, when I want. The band has allowed me to have the control to know when I need to cut back and stay away from things that don't fit into what I want. I love my band!!!

With a starting weight of only 86.2 a weight loss of 11lbs is fabulous! With such a low BMI you need to be more realistic, the weight isn't just going to fall off. The band is a tool, not a magic wand. Just keep working with it.

WOW!! finally, someone on here that thinks like i do. i dieted my first year with the band and only lost 17 lbs. i was miserable. i was still having to measure food and count calories, and i had spent all of this money but was losing NO weight. so i visited my regular doc, who suggested that i eat what my body wanted me to eat, just listen to my band and let it be the tool for moderation that it is intended for. when i did this, the pounds started melting off. now, i dont count calories, or grams of Protein, etc. if i want an ice cream, i eat one, but nowadays, instead of getting a large blizzard and finishing it then wanting more, i eat about half of it and i am sick of it. i never thought i would know that sensation. i never understood those ppl who paid $4 for an icecream, then threw half of it out. my band has helped me get to that point. i am currently 20 lbs away from my goal weight, and it has taken 2 1/2 years. not exactly the rapid results that many of us expect and hope to see, but nevertheless, i am currently smaller than i EVER thought i would be 3 years ago.

but anyway, back to topic...did not mean to hijack the thread...your complaint is a common one that you will see over and over on this board. once the swelling from surgery goes down, your stomach is wide open. the doc does not want you eating solids or big portions because he wants your band to heal in its place...with your stomach and stitches forming scar tissue around the band to help secure it in its place. this process does NOTHING for hunger, so you are probably still hungry. and as far as your calorie count...your body is probably trying to hold on to its old metabolism. it has probably noticed the decrease in calories and has accordingly adjusted your metabolism to maintain the status quo...which is heavy. just keep the faith and know that if you sit on that plateau for a year, eventually, your body will respond.

exercise is a must. the band did not help me in that area...it was just me and my will power to get my butt to the gym.

good luck...hang in there. it will get better!

Hey Bandaid, I guess areallady beat me to it. She's a real lady too!! When I got banded, I set a goal to run a 5K. Once I had trained enough to do that (still hadn't run in an official race) I thought what else is there. I found triathlons. Maybe they found me. I am only doing the Sprint distance now. That is still 750m of swimming, 20K (12.4 miles) of biking, and 5K (3.1 miles) of running. I've done 2 so far. I've also run in 2 5K races. I have 2 more this next week. So when I say I'm done T RY-ing, now I'm T R I-ing , you will hopefully understand!! I've gotten more motivation from triathlons than anything yet. If I can do, anyone can!!!! I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
