How long did you wait to drive after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I hope to be banded late August or early September. How long did the doctor tell you to wait before you could drive again? Thanks!

Oooh I didn't ask the Dr., nor did he tell! But I drove about 5 days from the day of my surgery. That's mostly because I didn't have access to my car for the first 3 anyways (I was in MX). The first day that I did drive it was fine, but was a little different because I was still a little bloated/swollen in the stomach area, and had to move my seat around. I'm only 9 days out now and the bloating seems to finally be subsiding!

Thanks! That's why I said the bloating is finally coming down because for 4 days after surgery I was still the same and it was so frustrating, LOL!!! 13 before and 8 after, 105 to go.

I was told that I could drive once I was off of pain meds an they were out of my system. I can tell you that I drove 6 days post op and that was too soon. I was still somewhat weak and didn't have lots of energy.

I had the option of staying in the hospital overnight. I was able to drive myself home the next day. It was a 2 1/2 hour drive. I stopped 3 times to get out and walk around. This was probably not the smartest thing I ever did, because I was really tired. But I made it home safely. (Also went in and worked 3 hrs the following day...just to go to a meeting I couldn't get out of. Don't even ask me what they discussed!)

My doc said just to wait 24 hours after your last pain meds. I had mine on Friday, took my last pain med Saturday and was driving on Monday--the only problem is the shoulder harness chafed my incision.

My doc said I could drive on day 5 post-op.

To protect my incisions, I brought a towel with me in the car to put between my stomach and the seat belt. That was a big help to make myself more comfortable.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
