I need some advice

Recommended Posts

OK, I had my band filled Monday. I can barely eat, it took me an hour and a half to get down one scrambled egg, that was with all of the sliming and spitting in between, an probably three bites of refried Beans. What the heck? At first I thought I was just swollen but I am on my fourth day of this. I can hardly drink anything. Like I have had probably 8 ounces of Water in two days, I can't make myself drink because it hurts.... Should I ride it out or am I too tight?

You need an unfill. Run, do not walk to the phone and call your surgeon. I have had one fill 3ccs and by the same evening Water was giving me indigestion. I called the doctor the next day and met him at the hospital where he removed 1.5-2ccs. I could feel the pressure leaving as he withdrew the Fluid. Two weeks later in his office I told him liquids and mushies went down okay, but solids were still giving me some trouble. He took out another .5 cc. I haven't had a fill since. I went for one, but he talked me out of it because I had lost 7 pounds since my previous visit. So I went home to work on my head hunger and to continue eating right. I can eat more than a 1/2 cup of food, but I am slowly still losing because I am staying on track with Proteins, fats and carbs, minimizing salt and sugar. I just had my first major bloodwork, and my cholesterol is lower than it has ever been since it started being measured. I think I must have been born with higher numbers. Your discomfort is because you are too tight. Call your surgeon.

Boobar, You might want to call your surgeon. It sounds like you may need another adjustment. Not drinking enough Water could lead to dehydration. Best of luck I had a fill just like you and I "rode it out" I lost 18 lbs before I could eat without slimming. What a trip having my little "rubber" band.

Boobar,

I wasn't being flippant in my replay to you. I really suffered being too tight. I would have had to fly back to Mexico to get an unfill. I had a four hour window in the middle of the day when I could get food down. I had to put all food in the blender, and drink juice all day because even Water burned my band area.

I suggested you call your surgeon and visit with him on the phone so you would not have to suffer as I did. You may need an unfill. Best wishes to you. Sandy

I didn't think you were being "flippant", I was just wondering how long you held out to see if there was any relief insight withouth having to go back to the dr. Sorry if you took it the wrong way!!

Boobar: Try drinking a cup of hot tea in the morning or .5 hour before you eat a meal. This has really helped me keep solid food down without that 'stuck' feeling. My band is usually very tight in the morning and once I have my hot tea, I'm good for the whole day. Try it and let me know if it helps you.

I drink coffee every morning, and I couldn't even get that down!! This morning I woke up drank some coffee and was able to eat a scrambled egg!! I have been drinking Water and it is going down and staying down!! Maybe I was just super swollen from all of the vomiting I was doing. I feel much better now and I think I can live with this now. Thanks for all of your advice I really appreciate it. I have no one else to talk to about this, and I hate calling my Dr. office all of the time!

I guess everyone REALLY is different. I found that after having my 2nd or 3rd fill, my body changed. Now when I get fills it takes about 3-4 weeks before I can really eat any solid foods!! apparently (FOR ME) thats how long it takes for the swelling of the tissue around the band to go down and loosen the band a little. That and the weight loss during that time. I just have to make sure I SLOWLY SIP Water or whatever I am drinking in order to not be dehydrated. Soups have become my best friends after fills!!

I had my 2nd fill this past week.... initiallyl right after my fill when I drank the glass of Water to "test" it I felt it gurgle down... it went down, but gurgled... I definately felt different. They were a little concerned and wanted to possibly take about 1/2 cc out, but I wanted to ride it out. So two days later, I am just moving on to instant oatmeal for Breakfast and was able to get down refried Beans last night.... those didn't seem to cause me any problems, although in the morning I am tighter... my first few bites of oatmeal hurt, but then I just let it pass and very awaringly nibbled on the rest.... and chew chew chewed! I got the rest down without problem and am not PBing or sliming... so I think I am going to ride this out.... I just think finally I have restriction and it's something to learn to live with... as long as I can get food (solid food) down and get my Water intake and not hurt or PB or slime... I must be at my "sweet spot". Anyone think differently? Would love to hear if I might need an unfill.

I had a fill yesterday & today I feel like a have a small lump in my throat. I've been sipping Water then decided to try some Tomato Soup. Sip sip but it isn't flowing thru...I haven't pbd but I keep getting the hiccups. They don't last long but I've had them about 4 times already today.

This is my 5th fill & the first time I have felt this kind of restriction....is it normal?

So yesterday I could not even keep my spit down. I felt awful. This morning I sipped my cup tea for almost 2 hours. it stayed down but when I sipped on a Protein shake....ugghh that heavy feeling started. So I called the nurse...she said I probably need some taked out so make an appt for FRIDAY!!!! Freakin Friday! In the mean time drink warm liquids in the morning & Jello in the afternoon.

Is this right?!? I lost 4# between Fri morn & this morn! That's not good. I want to guzzle some Water.

You have probably already figured this out but you need to be loosened. I have just had my 3rd fill and am really feeling a restriction but am able to eat without all the slimming and other bad things. If I eat too much I am in real trouble and also if I don't chew my food very well or eat too fast I get immediate notification.

I'm with you on the scrambled egg thing. I've had 4 fills and it's been since May had the surgery, the scrambled egg thing started after the 3rd fill (now at 7cc's). I think it's because in the am I am really tight, I have to east mush like yogurt and then wait drink my Water then by lunch I'm good. But scrambled eggs and dry white meat chicken just get stuck. So I eat over medium eggs now and I'm fine. Guess just means we found that unique can't eat food item they warn us about....

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
