Streching the pouch with to much liquid?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was banded five days ago. Well, there is gas pains and bloating and some pain but I feel okay. I am on full liquids now.

I didn't feel nauseated and the Water went down well without pain from the beginning. I can feel it kind of slipping over two "obstacles" after swallowing, I guess it's the swelling and the band.

What I was wondering about... When I flew home (four days after surgery) I had to spend four hours on the airport and I got hungry. So I bought milk (2 cups in one carton) and had that over the time of 2 hours. Is that to much?

How much liquid is to much?

Will it hurt when I stretch the pouch?

And I feel bloated after EVERYTHING I "eat". That will go away, right?

Thanks!

~Kat

My first 2-3 days following surgery, i could only drink 4 oz at a time and that was within a 15-20 minute time frame ... i had a lot of swelling then .. i am now a little over 2 wks post-op and i have no problem drinking any amount of liquid in any time frame .. that's been my experience so far

Today is day 3 post-op for me. I started full liquids today.. and I'm having more gas pain than yesterday on Clear Liquids. 4oz in 2 hours was the goal on clear liquids. From what I've read on full liquids.. the goal is to get 64 oz in for the day. Cream Soup never tasted so good!

No you can't stretch your pouch with too much liquid. Liquid goes right through the band into your stomach.

I was feeling very weak and dizzy 5 days post-op and called my doctor's office and spoke with the nurse (she said it sounded like I was dehydrated and needed more sugar). Anyway, I told her at the time that I was terrified of stretching my band and she said it's really difficult to stretch your band on liquids and soft mushies.

So, why do they tell you to sip, sip, sip then?

I am having issues with the drinking bit...how do you quantify a sip? If I drink normally, I feel fine but want to follow the rules.

You are correct! sip sip sip is told to some people because your band and swelling can leave a tight passage after surgery.

I just had my band Installed 3 days ago, during the process a fluoroscopy was performed to see how well fluids passed through the pouch, and hence the band.

The flow through my band was excellent with the liquid, the girl who had surgery same day as me was told to SIP SIP SIP because he had less of a passage way.

Like most things with the lap band, it is person specific... While I don't know that NOT sipping would stretch the stomach, I'm certain it wouldn't, it would probably result in reflux or some certain discomfort if your new stomach cannot handle it as fast as your providing it.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
