Starting out exercising?

Recommended Posts

I'd like to start out exercising, but I don't know how to go about doing it. Like for how long? How often? I have a treadmill, so I'd really like to use that, but I end up getting tired pretty easy. How did you guys start out?

commit to whatever you think pushes yourself a little bit but doesn't make you feel like you're going to die. so say right now you can do 10 minutes...do that for a week and then the next week increase the time by a minute or 2. for me, building my stamina before my speed helped me alot. so just keep your speed at like 3mph or whatever you can handle. after you've increased your time some, start increasing your speed. i think commitment is the biggest thing though. keep a calender and tell yourself you're going to 500 treadmill minutes in august or something like that. make it doable but a little bit of a challenge.

i started out very S L O W... i think my first exercise "session" was on the treadmill for about 5 minutes at 2-2.5 MPH.

but i went consistently. every other day i went to the gym. at first, it took me longer to drive there than to exercise, but i gradually built up. dont get discouraged, you can do it!!

Start out slow. If your treadmill has an area to take your pulse - try to monitor that. You want your heart elevated enough that your body is working, but not too high to where you are in danger of exhausting yourself.

You can aim for 3 days a week and increase that as you feel you are ready. The most important thing is start moving. Whether it is using the treadmill, walking around the block or doing an exercise DVD.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
