It's really happening! - July 31st

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

My name is Cami, I am a 38 (almost 39) year old woman, wife, mom in a suburb of Dallas.

First I want to say thank you to everyone who has posted their stories or information on this site. I have been lurking for a couple of weeks as I have researched where to have my lap band surgery. I found the right fit from a suggestion on here. Your insights and experiences are so very valuable. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I am a self pay patient so everything is moving VERY quickly.

I called Monday to follow up on the pricing and the next steps and as of yesterday I have met with the nutritionist and had my pre-op appointment. I will be having Lap band surgery on July 31st.

Thursday I had to start the pre-op diet (liquid only). Yes, I am HUNGRY but I keep telling myself this time I will SEE results.

I am so excited, nervous about the pain. I had laproscopic (sp?) gall bladder surgery in 2003 and I thought it was a bit more painful than I had expected. Geeeze... with my C- Section I was painting 3 days later but not so much with the gall bladder surgery. I am wondering how quickly people felt better and would you describe your tummy as feeling like you have done 1000 situps, and someone kicked you? One big bruise and very sore moving from laying down to getting up? These are my memories from the previous laproscopic experience. Don't get me wrong.... I am PSCYCHED for the surgery just slighty apprehensive about pain with 2 new puppies and a 5 year old. :biggrin2:

I look forward to sharing my own experience and success along the way!

Congratulations on getting the lapband! I'm 3-1/2 weeks post-op and am feeling good!

Right after the surgery getting in and out of chairs was hard - and I slept in my recliner - thank GOD for that recliner. Trying to get in and out of bed was way too painful for me. I think I slept in the recliner for about 1 week, then was able to migrate to the bed and either slept on my side or on my back with pillows under my head and under my knees.

Everyone seems to be different in how they feel after the surgery. I had gall bladder surgery a year ago and that was a breeze. For the lapband surgery in only incision that gave any discomfort was the port incision. Yesterday I wore some pants to work with an elastic band. The pants weren't tight, but they "fit" and they must have ridden up and rubbed on my port incision a little because all day I was knowing the incision was there.

But the healing looks great. In a few more weeks I think you will hardly be able to see the incisions.

I went ahead and took about 2 weeks off of work because I wanted to be in the mushy eating stage before going back to work. I'm glad that I took 2 weeks off, but have gone back easily after a full 7 days after surgery.

Best of luck! It's like having a baby ..... uncomfortable afterwards, but goes away quickly.

Brenda!

Thanks so much for your response....hmmmm... sounds like I remember. Who knows maybe this one wont be so bad.

Do you have to do to a liquid diet before hand? What are you drinking now? The office I went through has me on Optifast for preop but I don't like the taste too much and am looking forward to post op where I can have my own Protein Drink of choice.

Congrats on your banding! You are doing great it looks like!

I was on a liquid diet about a week and a half before surgery which was an Adkins protien shake in the morning, an Adkins protien shake at lunch with 1 cup of cooked green vegetable or 2 cups of raw green veggie, then the same for dinner. If I ate a salad, then 1 TBS of fat free dressing was allowed. For the green veggie, I got the little 8 oz. cans of green peas at Walmart. For me, it made it satisfying since the peas were a little sweet. I could also have sugar free Jello or a sugar free popsicle in the evening.

For one week after surgery it was Clear liquids. Beef and chicken broth (Rachel Ray's broth, from Walmart was really good - MUCH more flavor than Swansons or other brands.) Could also have Jello and S/F popsicles. I swear, I was beginning to wonder if strawberry jello would taste good with a little salt, pepper and garlic powder!! I read on-line as well that some people got the Campbells Won Top and drank the broth out of that. I also went to GNC and got their Isopure protien powder, which is a very fine protien powder. The people in the store said the chocolate tastes the best, so that's what I got. It packs a big protien punch. It's expensive, because it's a BIG bottle, but you'll be using it in the weeks to come to help get in your protien requirement anyway. I went to Marshall's and also got some S/F syrups, like you put in coffee .... Raspberry and Amaretto ... and adding a little of that to the chocolate protien shake helped change it up a little.

Another good source of liquid Protein .... since you're a Texas gal ... is when you get to the mushy stage, the HEB Mootopia Chocolate milk is awesome and budget friendly! There's 15g of protien in each 1 cup serving with 150 calories. I used it as an afternoon snack at work so that I wouldn't be overly hungry by the time I got home from work, which isn't until between 6:30 and 7:00 in the evening.

I'm a self pay and even though I was really excited to get this done, I really started doubting myself a few days before surgery if I was doing the right thing. From what I read in here, that seem pretty normal.

I can say right now though, I have no regrets what so ever. After going through all of that liquid stage I have a new appreciation for savory, flavorful food and it's SO NICE to satisfied with just a little bit.

My first fill is 8/5. I'm excited and nervous about it all at the same time. Not because I'm afraid of the needle, but just want to be extra careful after the fill how I eat so that I don't have that sliming and PBing stuff that I read about in here.

What else do you get to have with your Optifast?

Thanks so much for all the info! Besides Optifast.... I can have s/f popsicles, Water, low cal cran juice and broth but no food. I did have my own Protein Powder yesterday because I was so beaten down with the smell of the Optifast (vitiman smell). I was blissfully happy which is good because my hubby was starting to worry. I love Designer whey Protein. I decided I am going to use it one time a day to make sure I get enough since I am not even finishing the Optifast. The designer Whey protein is an approved after band drink so I think it will be fine. Ahhhh... Self pay too, huh? Yes a big investment but it got to the point that I thought... it is now of never! I am turning 40 next year and I want to ROCK in my 40s!

Yeah .... instead of a new car or new cabinets and granite in my kitchen, I decided to get a "new me". Sure wish this procedure was around when I was going into my 40's!

By the way - you have lots to look forward to - your "40's" are fun!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
