Omg my port is detached!!

Recommended Posts

Like ANY of you need to be burdened with this.. but I found out at the doctors today that my port is detached... yes I typed detached:mad:.....

So I went to the hospital today.. I am like 60 days post op so it was time for my first fill... I have lost 20 pounds since surgery and I am chomping at the bit to lose more more more.. So I lay down on the table and BANG there it is... I think.....hmm that doesnt look right but I try to talk myself down that maybe it is the way the xray turns it around or something.. trying to keep myself calm BUT knowing it is going to be bad news...sooo..they say it loos like the port is flipped... and then they touch it and low and behold it is COMPLETELY detached... just free floating....They PUSH PUSH PUSH on my tummy trying to get it to pop upright to put in a fill... Oh my it hurt bad... I actually didnt feel the needle that they stuck in only to realize it was the bottom side of the port...

I am ticked ticked and even more ticked.. because since 3 weeks post op I have been telling them that something wasnt right.. that I was having very sharp pains in that area.. like a pulling burning... I called the on call surgeon and he assured me nothing was wrong and to just take it easy for a week.... so then I had the same kind of pain and called again...The surgeon told me to come in to the office the next morning... they pushed on my fat stomach and said everything is fine.. NOW if they had taken me to xray and figured it out sooner I would have been able to get a fill and REALLY get on the road to losing...

As you can tell I am sooooo ANGRY!!!

Sorry to rant about it.. I just wanted EVERYONE to know.. If something doenst feel right... You MUST MUST insist on having an xray to see the device.....

Ok time to try and get my blood pressure back to a normal level.....

I just have to be really mindfull of what I am eating... and portions and such... I want to lose and not gain while I am waiting for the fill....

I knew it was a possibility but I was and am still VERY upset....Felt good to vent though and for you to reply....

I was told by someone that was done by the same doctor as I was, that he no longer sutures the ports to the abdominal wall. It is free to move. I am assuming that is the case with me. Is this what you mean, or do you mean it has come off the tubing?

My doc definetly attaches the port to your adominal wall with suctures..... I havent heard of surgeons letting it free float.... I guess IF they could have accessed it then I wouldnt have been soo ticked.... but with it free floating they were not able to turn it over stablize it and then stab a needle in.....

Have you gone for a fill and seen it on the screen...?? If it is free floating you will be able to tell...

I could see my just moving all over the place....

The tubing is OK as far as I know but they havent put any liquid in so who knows at this point....

Dear stay tuned:

That is frustrating, no doubt about it. Sounds like your port flipped...and it unfortunately DOES happen.

My tubing kinked, and my second fill resulted in WAY too much Fluid in since they couldn't tell if it was going in or not. Once I drank Water, it was obvious it HAD gone in I had extreme pain, vomiting. This was on June 6th - also the night of my 3rd child's high school graduation -- in our home town 60 miles away. So, I ended up missing graduation and having an emergency port revision instead.

It's just a memory now, and I was upset at the time, but what are you going to do? It sets us back, it's not convenient. I've managed to do very well by sticking to the band rules while awaiting for my delayed 2nd fill - which I finally had today - because it was delayed while I re-healed.

Hope you can get this fixed real soon and get back in the swing of things. In a few months from now, I won't seem so bad once you're back on track. Hang in there!!!!

well that stinks!! so what did they do? I had a scare that was similar to that. My doctor tried to do my first fill in the office without xrat, but was unable to find the port. I have to sweat it out for a week until they could schedule me in xray, but thankfully everything was OK he was just about 1/2 off. He documented the location better and on my subsequent fill he found it no problem.

you need a very good advocate to helpyou talk to your doctor, it has been my experience that they never listen to you when you know and feel that something is wrong . keep trying. it is very distreesing.

Freedom- They pushed and rolled my belly around trying to get the port to flip over so that they could do a fill... but it just wouldnt flip back over... It was really painfull too while she was doing it.... So much so that when she did put a needle in to try and access it I didnt even feel it go in or come out!!!

bgrand-I am going to try and try and try until they listen to me..... I figure this... while I am in their care my body is only rented to them... I have had this body for almost 35 years... I think I know what feels right and what feels wrong.....

Stay Tuned, what has happened to you and your port incident? I am 5 months out and still feel twinges with my port area and the scar is sorta numb. I plan on speaking to my doctor when I go Sept 19 to see if he will help be understand any of this. My weight loss is slow but sure, right now I have lost 45 lbs and I am content...for now. Just want to make sure everything inside is fine!!! Hope everything turned out well for you. We fought to long to receive these band and now I don;t want to fight that battle again unless I have to.

Busy!!!

I am in the appeal process with my insurance... They denied my port revision... saying that the FDA does not have substantial information to support the need for this secondary surgery in order for the original surgery to work..

Can you BELIEVE that....?? Hello no way to get to the port NO way for the band to be adjusted and work... duh!!!

Could take 60-90 days for a decision......

First off, I hope everything is better or getting better for you, I didn't catch the date you posted this. OMG, I can't believe that your port is/was detached. That has to be horrible. And the fact that nobody ever even thought to Xray it to make sure nothing was going on with all the pain you were having, that makes it even worse.

Stay-Tuned, seems the insurance would understand the surgery is not "complete" since the appliance was not installed according to the manufactor's guidelines. I know they will say the port was originally attached but it is not normal practice for the port to detach. Makes me wonder where their head is or their sense of reasoning. Good luck, hope they realize since the device is not functioning correctly they wasted the company's (your) funds and insurance companies don't want to wasted money. If they deny you contact an attorney.

I to feel something is wrong with my port and I can't get an xray to find out . the doctor doesn't seem interested in trying to find out . I have not even seen him since surgery just his nurses and assistants, who would never ,ever consider that ther might be a problem. keep on fighting to get your port fixed as it might help all of us who are having problems

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
