I thought about getting sisterlocks for awhile but the upkeep is too expensive. I lost a ton of hair when I was pregnant (think George Jefferson) and had to rock a wig when I came back from maternity leave. Because of how horrible I felt bald it was one of the reasons I decided against gastric. I also decided to go natural and go with twist instead of sister locks, all in hopes of getting my hair back to its healthy natural state and not losing so much of it after surgery. I will keep my fingers clasped (as in prayer).

Hey San I was natural for many many years, I even had locks that came to the middle of my back. Try Sonya Tutuwan at Changes Salon and Spa if you want advice and upkeep on wearing your hair natural. The website is Changes Salon Spa and Wellness Center::: detection flash plugin

I have heard that anesthesia can mess with hair as well, and that as your sytem gets rid of it, the hair does too.

I think that might be in more extreme cases, and of course everyone is different.

Like someone said up there, I can always rock a weave if I need to lol.

I have upped my Protein, doing hair and nail Vitamins from GNC. I hoping that my system will be so strong that my hair will not fall out. My hair is finally started filling in with these locks. I refuse to have it fall out. Yes sisterlocks are exipensive but I am going to take the class and do it myself. I also don't buy any other products, only castille soap for Shampoo. I has been worth every penny that I have spent so far.

Hello there!

First of all, congratulations! Keep up the good work. Next week I have my behavioral therapist appointment, so I am looking foward to another step. Then, on Oct 3, the nutritionist. My question/comment is actually about your hair. I notice from your message that you use castille soap for your hair. I have castille soap, but have not used it as a Shampoo. It works well on african-american hair? Also, you mentioned that that is the only product you use...so, no oils and/or conditioners on a weekly (i.e., 2 or 3 times per week) basis? Please let me know. Presently I have my hair in braids anyway to give it rest for the summer, but I am due to have it done again and am curious. When did you have your surgery? Also where? Contact me when you can!

Jazzy4Health,

Not to hijack the thread, but I've been natural since January - started growing out my last relaxer actually before that, but I grew my hair out for about 3 months, then did the BC (Big Chop) and went down to a TWA (Teeny-Weeny Afro).

Talk about a change! My relaxed hair was down to my shoulders, but started breaking off because I wasn't taking care of it. I found a great website - www.nappturality.com - where there are tons of natural-haired sistas and they have tons of advice on keeping your hair healthy.

Check them out - I've found wonderful products via recommendations there, and my hair is so healthy now...

Jazzy4health,

If I only used castille soap on my hair when I was natural, my hair would have looked like a brillo pad. I have sisterlocks. When I was natural I condition washed and used a lot of products to soften my hair. Being natural slowed down the alopehia (sp?) I haven't had surgery yet. I am one of those people that love to prepare for thing, so I have been preparing for surgery. Good luck

Sandra

When I was locked I used the Dr. Bonners (Sp?) peppermint or lavender. It was great. I also mixed essential oils like Vitamin e, peppermint, and jojoba with olive oil. I would also boil chamomile tea and used it after I Shampoo then rinse. Ya girl had long gorgeous locks that went to the middle of my back!

Thanks all! That is pretty much what I gathered from the doc, etc. Hairloss really only occurs when not following the nutritionist's advice. Also, in the case of hair that does have some problems it begins to grow back fairly easily. My concern had been that in the past I did have problems with my hair/scalp, so I was just wondering. I too went natural for a few years, but the way my hairdresser tended to my hair it always looked slammin'. She was spanish - and not for nothing - but I have found due to the diversity in their ethnicity, in general spanish people are excellent with all forms of "ethnic" hair. As for me, after wearing braids for about 2.5 years, my hair was so healthy. It has always been super thick and soft, but NEVER had length. When I had it done is a soft hot comb style it was passed the middle of my back. Unfortunately due to some health issues...I had to cut it and have never grown it like that again. When I got married (2 years ago next Tuesday (biggrin) it was about 3 inches past my shoulders. Anyway, it has been nice having it in the breads. My hubby loves anything I do, so that is cool too. But, it was a great break during the humid weather.

Glad for the info. Hope you are all doing well at whatever step of your weight loss you find yourselves. Things are going well for me. My husband gave me a really nice complement tonight and said that he could tell I was losing weight and really enjoying my exercising schedule. Even though the 4 miles a day is very tough sometimes, but it is worth it! Well, I hope to hear about your progress soon ladies and will keep you up-to-date on mine!

Your sister in the Quest for

Thanks a bunch, Curves, for the report - must get some Biotin and keep the Protein high after surgery!

I went to the beauty shop on Saturday... mind you I had not been there since having surgery. When she started washing my hair she said... "what have you been taking? " I said "oh I been on Protein shakes and Biotin." She said my hair was "scary thick..."

I guess the increase to the Protein and Biotin are really helping alot.

Note to self: Get some biotin!

What hair products are good to use on Remi? Has anyone tried the lace weave system?

I actually have very thick hair but am wearing sew ins to grow it out (for good this time)

I just had some saga indian remy taken down(loved it!) Its great for a silky straight look but also does well with rollers. It can't take a lot of heat or heavy greasy products.

I currently have VIP yacky remy. I bought the yacky remy because it has a little more texture and I need to be able to flat Iron the style that I am wearing (lovin' it). I still don't use greasy heavy products

You have to be careful with remy cause you don't want to look like a wet cat. Besides it costs too much money to mess up! Also, if you use product you are gonna need to Shampoo it at least every 1 1/2 weeks.

My picks: Aveda all the way! I use the Light Elements Smoothing Fluid ($24) for sheen on the saga remy and I use it to flat Iron the yacky remy. It is very light weight, high gloss and yields great results. I also use the Aveda Brilliance Anti-Humectant pomade ($19) for fly aways and shine. I swear by them on my on hair as well. You will never go back to another product! The Shampure is great conditioner and shampoo if you are washing it yourself.

If your stylist is not use to working with remy feel free to let her know that it can't take a lot of heat or oil (grease in the dirty dirty)

I hope this helps. Let me know how you hair turns out

I think hair loss occurs on an individual basis. I didnt lose any hair. BUT my hair was brittle for months after surgery.

On the natural hair note...Ive been natural for 11years, my whole adult life. And what I have learned in that time is that you have to try different products. LOTS AND LOTS.

Right now I swear by Aussie Moist for conditioner washes, Aussie 3 Minute Miracle DEEEP for detangling and deep condtioning, ABBA True Curls Shampoo (organic), and ABBA Nourishing Leave in Conditioner, AND ElastaQP DPR deep conditioner. Like I said LOTS.

Nappturality is a great resource. MotownGirl.com is the original natural hair care site.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
