PMS swelling... anyone have this problem?

Recommended Posts

I have had my lapband for almost 2 years now and since the very beginning I would have these horrible episodes of severe swelling of my stomach. It gets to the point where I am not able to take my daily meds, drink any fluids and of course no eating. These episodes have caused dehydration, vomiting blood and severe heart burn and reflux.

After speaking to my surgeon he said that I could attribute this to my monthly period and the bloating that come along with this. He suggested that my GP perscrib a Water pill to help with the complications. My GP didn't feel comfortable doing this for various reasons and my surgeon had to then agree. I looked at over the counter water pills, but they all contain caffeine which i can not have:( So still nothing is solved.

I get fills and UN fills and this has gone on for 2 years. I have only lost 30lbs. I am so frustrated and i wonder if anyone has this problem of has any helpful advice. Thank you for any help i am desperate at this pointconfused.gif

I am not getting stomach swelling, but I am retaining Water, never did that before, I see it in my fingers and feet now. I can't get anything down the day before and the first two days of my period. Even mushy and liquids are tough.

Before surgery, my periods were easy, no cramping, no Water retention now, my family knows it my time of the month because my face looks drawn and I look beat.

I think that is a better way to descibe it is as bloating. I too get very puffy and hold Water all over. But the kicker is I cant get anything down which leads to the problems I mentiond:sad:

The nurse said i probably will need to keep my band loser then normal to compinsate for my monthly friend. But then why the hell did get this thing if i cant even tighten it up:mad2:

I'm sorry i am just frustrated. I paid for this out of pocket and 2 years gone and I have nothig to show for it

i have to take 2 diuretics a day and druing tom it is especially bad. have you ever considered a diuretic?

my doctor says when you are swollen (hands, feet, etc) then your organs are going through the same thing so you will be tighter. it hits me every month.

Hi I get tight the week before my TOM each month. My sirgeon suggested that instead of filling and unfilling do water pills, he would even prescribe one himself. But it looks like both have reasons not to for you.

you said you are looking for a non caffeine water pill, I found one at Walmart, not wure where else it would be. it is Sundown's Natural Water Pills.

good luck

a prescription diuretic is probably your best bet. it does not have caffeine but it can decrease your potassium levels. i take hydrochlorthiazide and i love it. but i have severe swelling and some days i have to take a lasix in addition to that.

I was so glad to find this thread. I am having this trouble each month. My band seems to be filled kinda tight anyway, so it is really hard with PMS swelling. I try to do Soups at that time and I take HCTZ also. I have found that the warm fluids go down better.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
