PreOp Appointment - What did you discuss?

Recommended Posts

I got approved yesterday, scheduled for PreOp on the 16th, and surgery (with luck!) on the 24th. What I want to know is what everyone discussed at their PreOp appointments.

I'm alternating between joy and fright right now and need to read some LBT to calm my nerves.

TIA,

Lisa

I asked a lot of questions regarding what to bring with me--what to expect when I woke up. Clothes, walking, time in the hospital. . .

It was also concluded that I have to take my nails off and remove my nose ring. We also chatted about my pre-op diet, and how much she expected me to lose in a month.

Best wishes to you--I'm having surgery on the 24th, so if you get your date--we'll be right on the same track!

Lisa,

I had my pre-op on Friday. It was a group meeting, with general information given by one of the doctors in the clinic...what to expect, how to avoid complications, what my responsibilities as a patient are. The dietician reviewed pre and post op diets, and gave a lot of good info about which supplements are best, etc.

The doctor met with each patient individually, to review medications and see which ones might need adjusting...for example, I have to stop taking my anti-inflammatory for arthritis, because it is an nsaid, which can stop the blood from clotting like it should. He answered any questions I had - take a list of them with you, because you will not remember them all! - and then the office staff - the nurse, exercise physiologist, nutritionist, insurance lady - were available to answer personal questions.

Every surgeon is going to be different, though, I would bet.

My doc did not tell me that I had to take my acrylic nails off, but he did say that shorter nails are better, and that you must wash your hands and scrub under your nails with a brush before you touch your incisions post-op. The incisions are good spots for bacteria to enter your body, and hands and nails are notorious for harboring germs. (my nails are quite short, especially by fake-nail standards, so perhaps that is why he didn't tell me to take them off?)

We discussed how to get prepared for that day all the rules like no eating after midnight. what type of anesthesia.. i met the anesthesiologist...

All it really was basic explaination of what was going to happen on surgery day from the time you get there till the time post op when you get to go home...

Its more or less a meeting so you know what to expect.. And of course any last minute questions you may have.

CONGRATS ON GETTING APPROVED!!! AND WELCOME TO YOUR NEW HEALTHY LIFE... BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!

For some reason they always want the fake nails off for surgery... I think it has to do something with the length...When your nails are longer you can harbor a variety of bacteria... and can possible cause staph infections. Thats why you never see medical professionals with fake nails.

Jewelery also can interfere with surgery.

My nails are acrylic pink and whites and are pretty short. They are attached to my nailbed with what seems like cement, and I will NOT take them off. LOL!

Hey Everyone!

So about the whole fake nails thing. From what I have heard from other people that have had surgery including the lapbad is that they can tell if your getting enough oxygen from you body or not by looking at your nails. Maybe some doctors go by this and some don't. Who knows....I won't have to worry about that because I have been too poor saving up for the surery to get my nails done in awhile! LoL! Good Luck to all! I am only on day 6 of PreOp diet of 3wks so pray for me! LoL!

This is also one of the reasons.. there are many reasons behind it.. all that matters is that you cant have them because its for your saftey... they want the environment to be as sterile as possible

Thanks to everyone for the responses! I have to get through Tuesday, then the appt. is first thing Wed. morning - all I need now is patience! :smile2: I'm working on a list of questions, and will be sure to use some of the ideas I've read here. Fortunately for me, no fake nails to worry about - mine are my own mismatched set.

Just patience, patience, patience, and high hopes that I can get the surgery on the 24th as initially scheduled.

Fingers crossed (patiently :crying:),

Lisa

Did he give you something to replace the nsaid? I also take that and I can't imagine going withoutanything as the pain would be too severe for me.

From previous surgery experience,, they like to see the nail bed. its one of the best signs that all is well with you blood flow and the anestesia.. I have been asked to remove polish every time,,

would agree with other comment about the bacteria issue too.. fake nails carry a lot of it!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
