Banded yesterday and I have lots of questions

Recommended Posts

Yeah, since the day has gone on, I'm starting to experience some bad gas pains and yes, my urine is a funny color too.

Here's another question...I've not told any co-workers what surgery I had, nor my parents...just my immediate family and best friend. I really just didn't want to hear all of the unwelcome opinions and advice. Yesterday, We ran into someone (of course) and I had to explain why I was at the hospital and I said "I had a procedure done, you know, female, because of bad periods". Blah blah blah. Geesh, didn't that person go and call a family member on my husbands side? Now she has called here "oh what happened?" and seriously, its not concern, its just being nosey. How have y'all handled this?

Hi Everyone -

I was banded on Wednesday - and have been sleeping in my recliner. I tried the bed for a little while last night, slept on my side for about 30 minutes, then woke up sore and painful. Back to the recliner for me!! :-)

I know for sure that I wouldn't be able to make it back to work on Monday and now I'm glad that I've taken all of next week off.

My challenge at the moment is taking in less liquid at a time. My post op instructions says 1 TB at a time every 15-20 minutes, but good grief - I found I was getting way too thirsty and taking small sips more frequently. I did overdo it with a an Isopure shake today though and didn't take enough time with it. I found out what that feeling of "pressure" is that I've read about so many times on this forum!

Good luck to to you all! I'm so glad I did this .... even though earlier this week I was having all sorts of doubts!

Congratulations on your banding!

I had dry mouth but I chew gum all the time, sugarfree of course and I haven't had any gas from it.

I felt really tired and hard to move around for about 3 days but if you have a desk job, you may be ok to return on Monday. But, if you don't feel up to it, don't push yourself.

I have had a few BM's but they really didn't start for several days. I had been on the liquid diet 2 days before surgery and then took phoso-soda to clean me out so there really was nothing in there. Then, after surgery, you are on a clear liquid diet so it is mostly liquids and not really anything of substance for a BM.

I cooked pork for my family and took the broth, skimmed the fat and froze it in ice cube trays. Each cube is one ounce so I would just take 2 cubes, pop them in the microwave and then I added a little carne adovada seasoning for flavor. It worked great! I also took chicken noodle Soup, strained everything out (fed that to my kids) and then froze that soup in ice cube trays also. It was better than pure chicken broth because you could taste the flavor of the noodles.

My port is on the left so I was able to sleep on my right side about 2 days after my surgery but not on my left until about 5 or 6 days after. I still have not slept on my stomach because I am not sure if that is ok.

I did not use a straw, just took small sips.

I did not feel hungry until about day 9 on the liquid diet and had a really hard time until I was able to eat mushies. I called my Dr and they approved for me to get my first fill (only 2 cc) at 2 weeks post-op. I feel much better.

I took my pain meds and anti-nausea medicine for only 2 days but it made me feel extremely nauseous. After I quit taking it, I had no more nausea and I haven't had any pain either.

well u might want to get some freeze pops to suck on those that will help with the dry mouth.. I ate cream of chicken, cream of brocoli, cream of chicken and noodle Soups and stuff like that... but i had to stop taking my pain meds because it was making me sicker than i should have been... make sure u move around and sit up as much as poss. that will help to make u feel better also..about the tickers u can click on any ticker and it will pull up another window on your computer and u can create your own.. and then when it gives u the stuff to copy and paste.. click on edit my profile and click where it says edit signatures and paste and save...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
