STARVING- and NO weight loss???

Recommended Posts

I'm 8 days post op-

I've been doing really good with the "full" liquids diet. I don't think I've been going over about 600 calories a day, at the very most.

The strange thing is, I haven't lost any weight since Saturday (5 days). Why is this??? It's really frustrating me.

On top of that, I've been feeling sooo run down- all I've been doing is resting and sleeping. It's so bad that I can hardly keep my eyes open. Today I fell asleep at 1PM and didn't wake up until 10pm (I had gotten a full night's sleep the night before)

Why am I not losing any weight, and What can I do to have more energy??

Are you getting plenty pf Proteins in? I know if I dont have my protien i feel very weak and run down too. Also you might not be loseing weight because your body thinks your starving it so it is storing the fat you have. Im a new bandster too so this is just what im thinking.. you probably will be getting better advise.

Time for the lecture:

Once you are healed from surgery, your regular signals will return. It's NORMAL to be hungry now! But you're still on liquids or eating mushies, so it's a little harder to keep satisfied than it will be when you can eat solid food. To my mind it's very important to try, though, so that you don't compromise your healing phase by going too quickly to solids.

IMO, postops should be encouraged to eat or drink as much as they need to stay satisfied. When you're back on normal food you may very well not feel much change from before your surgery with regard to how much you can eat--your band is not designed to be effective without any saline in it. Most people don't feel restriction until after a fill or two, although if you pay attention you will likely find that your capacity has dropped and it really does take somewhat less to make you feel full.

Patience. This is not a race and you will not suffer any long-term negative effects if you eat enough now to stave off the grumbly tummy. After you get adjustments is the time to be looking at whether you have restriction or not. At this point, you probably don't and that is NORMAL.

As for why you're "not losing weight" that's just what the scale says today. Don't micro-analyze the numbers! In a couple of weeks you will probably be down 10 pounds or so and be laughing at your initial worry. Please just be sure to get enough Protein in now and don't compromise your healing by going to solids too quickly. Take care of your hunger.

how do I get protien when I am drinking liquids only. Water, milk today, s/f popcicles, and broth? what else can I add. Maybe that will give me some energy and feel full.

Thanks

Spldgrl, as soon as you're on full liquids you can start exploring the world of Soup. Any seafood Soup or egg-based soup will have lots of Protein, along with Protein drinks. For this stage there are, I think, some Protein powders that dissolve fully in liquids--Benefiber makes a protein supplement that dissolves as well as their Fiber supplement and could be taken in Water. And aren't there clear Protein Drinks, too? Go to a health food store and ask about that.

Good luck, and remember this stage is TEMPORARY! You'll feel better before you know it.

Protein drinks!! Boost, Ensure, protein powders mixed with yogurt, milk, ice, fruit juices, anything to make a thin smoothie out of it. I like Boost, personally. Already mixed, yummy, easy, and it gives me the "Boost" haha I'm looking for. Atkins makes a pre-mixed high protien drink, too. I like the taste of the Boost better, and they have a higher protien version. Good luck!

I don't think I've been going over about 600 calories a day, at the very most.

This could be your problem.

Add more calories, I know it sounds carzy but it is true. Ever here of your body going itno starvation mode? It is when the body holds on to every calorie ittakes in , in fear that no more food is coming. 600 calories is not enough. OR, it could be the change from Clear Liquids to ful lliquids, body may be in a bit of confusion. I know in my own experience when I went from clear to full liquids, I saw a stall in my weight loss and when I went from full liquids to mushy foods I saw a 1-2 lb gain, and the same from mushy to solids, it took my body about 3-4 days during each phase to adjust. You know you are not overeating or drinking, so try not to fret, main thing right now is healing, you are only 8 days post op. My doctor told me to not be concerned with weight loss during the 6 weeks post op, any weight loss is a bonus, the band is designed to be filled to work its best and to lose the wieght. Once you get your fills, the wieght will come off. Hang in there. I know it is frustrating but you have a lifetime with this band :)

I'm really glad to read advice from those who have gone though it before me. I too like chatrooper Find myself starving. I'm 3 days post op and have to try not to think about food to much. All I keep thinking about is a hamberger!! funny I hardly ate that many of them before. I've boiled some carrots in clear broth and put it though the blender. something about warm liquids that comforting. Also I'm having about 2 carnation shakes a day. Lots and lots of Water. Again thanks to everybody for their input.

Yesterday I was really, really low energy. Sunday I'm allowed to have pureed foods, but I cheated a bit yesterday and had about five bites of super pureed mashed potatoes. Afterwards, I felt soooooo much better, and today I woke up feeling good. Even though it was a few days early, it really helped me a great deal. AND as a bonus, I lost 2 lbs overnight. It was really an odd sensation, having food in my stomach for the first time since having the band.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
