Being Physical Challenging

Recommended Posts

Since I am so overweight, even walking up and down the stairs to do the laundry leaves me out of breath. I end up just staying in my room, laying on my bed and watching TV, everything else is too strenuous for me to do, does anyone have any advice as to how to get a full blown "bed potato" into doing something that won't leave me afraid that I won't be able to make it thru. Walking is hard because I am disabled and have a bad left leg, in a pool, I can walk but to get the energy to go to a pool seems like an enormous effort, everything I do is an enormous effort, even a shower, any help is needed, I'm tired all of the time also.:smile2:

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I've seen a tv program called Sit and Be Fit. It's a "mature" lady doing very simple exercises just sitting on a chair. Maybe you could start with something like that and as you get use to that, you could move on to something a little more strenuous. I think the important thing is, is to move your body. It doesn't have to be strenuous yet. Good Luck! You can do it!:smile2:

You have a tough challege ahead of you, but losing weight, even with the band, is also hard, and exercise is critical to your success. I am not a doctor, but you are likely tired because you avoid moving due to your weight and disability. You said it is hard for you to walk. Unless it is impossible you really need to try. It will only be baby steps at first, maybe a half a block from your house and back, or up and down the stairs to do laundry. If you lay on your bed feeling sorry for yourself about how hard everything is, you will defeat yourself before you start. Start with little goals and add to them later as you improve. If you never try, you never will.

Many many years (45) ago before exercise was known as a major help recuperating my Dad had a major heart attach. His doctor did not want him to do anything stressful. His chiropractor insisted that he start walking. He started walking from the back door to the front of the house a couple times a day. Then he would increase less than a half a block at time. In three months he was walking 5 miles a day and never had a heart problem after that. Remember baby steps little by little. Good luck and be proud of each step you take!

I agree with the others, doing a little bit each day will lead to doing more than you thought possible. I have went from full bedrest to up and moving with 2 babies to take care of in two days. At first it was just a challenge to get everyone in and out of the truck. Then we did a lap around the local grocery store (a/c and controlled weather). We work up to a lap around the mall, but it took a few months to get there. At first it was just a small walk around a small store. If you tell yourself you can do it, you are half way there. Good Luck!

I know this feeling well. My dr has just decided that walking the long hallway of my apartment isn't enough. Cause even though I can walk it more then I could a month ago. I need to gain endurance so he's ordering me to do hydro (Pool therapy) Since its easier on the joints. If I'm on my feet for more then 5 min my back SCREAMS and my legs go numb.

Got me a set of handheld weights i'm gonna start using with the chair type excersises too. Considering ankle weights for the hall walking but the doc said not yet. Since i'm now under a cardioligists care he said I have to be carefull on the excersising at first.

I want the portable bike pedal thing you can use sitting or put it on a table for use with the arms but gotta save up the $50 for it first.

I would start with the simple things like doing the laundry. Just try to make your day as active as possible around the house, and resolve to spend much less time simply sitting.

The challenges must be enormous, the emotional journey foreign to many of us, but the physical facts remain the same - push your body just a bit harder than it wants to go and it will respond by getting fitter. We all have to do that. It doesnt have to be so hard that it almost kills you.

Worry about walking, swimming and such when you've gotten into better shape.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
