Should I ask the doc for Metformin/Glucophage?

Recommended Posts

I am curious to know should I? I read a passage online ( I will attach it at the end) and I want to know is it true. I have been using the cream vaniqa and it has kinda slowed the Hair growth well not really slowed but it is very thin now not as thick and "like a man's beard" as it used to be LOL. But the dandruff is still crazy! And the oily skin is out of this world! But I wanna know now after surgery would it be a good move to make? Have you all or anyone had very good to excellent results from the metformin please lemme know. My follow up appt is 2morrow. Thanks for the feedback! Love and Blessings Apples! I just want to know that I CAN ovulate.... So whatever will help me to do that! Not looking to get preggo yet but I want to feel like a "normal woman" and ovulate!

Diabetes medications. The medicine metformin (Glucophage®) is used to treat type 2 diabetes. It also has been found to help with PCOS symptoms, although it is not FDA-approved for this use. Metformin affects the way insulin controls blood glucose (sugar) and lowers testosterone production. Abnormal hair growth will slow down, and ovulation may return after a few months of use. Recent research has shown metformin to have other positive effects, such as decreased body mass and improved cholesterol levels. Metformin will not cause a person to become diabetic.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in August, 2007. I started taking Glucophage at that time and I never noticed any changes. I still do not ovulate, I have minimal Hair growth, but that has not subsided either, and it didnt help me lose weight. This is the reason I decided to have surgery. I think the best way to get PCOS under control is to lose weight. Talk to your doctor and see if she thinks it will help.

A lady I used to work with took Metformin and low and behold after just 2 months got prego, so she absolutely swears by it!! Not sure about the hair problem though.

No need for the metformin he said .... Well ladies had my Dr's appt yesterday and he said everything is great he said my levels were never EXT HIGH like alot of PCOS people so he said that why he was classifying me as "pre-pcos" that I still had time to get it under control before it became full blown. He says that he is sure that I am ovulating now but he is sending me for blood work to be certain so I will let u guys know definetely if I am ovulating! He was so proud of me weight loss and I am too. HE seen me in December when I was a freaking house ... try double wide trailer even LOL! But its moving!

The metformin helped me some in the 2 years before my surgery but I notice the biggest difference in my PCOS symptoms after I started to shed weight and that was sans metformin (they took me off 90 days after my sugery when my blood sugars leveled out.) Good luck! And YAY for a doctor that is proud of you! Your doing awesome keep up the great work!

I could have written the exact same thing as above! Although my Hair growth is more than minimal...but I have taken Met for abt. 2 years and if anything, my PCOS has gotten much worse. More and more hair, more skin tags, more weight, hair is beginning to thin on head, still not ovulating.

With that being said, you should try it because it works great for some PCOS'ers.

Good luck!

I have been taking Metformin for about 7 months now and it really has helped me a lot...I'm sure my weight loss has some to do with that though...next week i have to go in for lab work...I may not need the Metformin anymore...yay.

I've been taking Actoplus Met since last November. It's Actos and Metformin in one pill. I have noticed some big changes. It keeps my weight loss steady and it does help with my facial hair. Sometimes I'll go for a while not taking it, and my weight loss stalls and my facial hair grows faster.

Applesmith, have you seen an Endocrinologist? If not, I highly recommend seeing one. My Endo is the only one that has been able to help me. My Gyno is the one that diagnosed me but was no help to me at all.

I have been on Metformin for about 5 years now. It did help regulate me and helped a little with the facial hair. My endocrinologist seems pretty confident that if all goes well with the lap band I will no longer need the Metformin.

Being on Metformin helped me lose about 45 lbs in one year. I was also walking about 2 miles per day and watching what I ate. It was actually easier for me to lose weight when I was on Ortho Tri-cyclen before I got married than with the Metformin, but I want to be clear that it did help. And I ovulate regularly now, as if I don't have PCOS. One could argue that it is because I lost some weight but the cycles became regular before I lost all the weight. If you have the option to get on Metformin, I'd do it! I still have dark skin around my neck, but my skin tags have slowed down and my acne has improved a little.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
