What to do before pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is approaching (June 6th). :rolleyes2:

My doc reccomended I begin the pre op diet 1 week prior to the procedure. What should I be doing (as far as dieting) in the mean time?

I've been cutting down on fatty foods, crewing more, & making better food choices. Any suggestions?

Also what did some of you do for pre-op diet? Did you buy Optifast products? Are there any over the counter or other shakes to use that are not so costly?

I'm the last person to ask about a pre-op diet. I spent the last few weeks pre surgery, saying goodbye to some of my favorite foods. I probably gained a few pounds...LOL!!!

Congrats and good luck.

Another Houston area person!!! Yeah  Who is your surgeon? I was told to do the slimfast Low Carb drinks. They are $5.50 area for a 4 pack at Walmart. I would cut out all carbonated drinks now!!! On my pre-op diet I did 3 amaze-rx shakes. For Breakfast you got one serving of two of the following - toast, egg, oatmeal, yogurt. dinner was 1 serving of lean meat and 2 servings of green veggie - Beans, brocolli, lettuce, peas. There are several good support groups in the area... PM anytime!!

Thanks for the info.

My surgeon is Dr. Robert Davis (TLC Big medicine).

I did a work up at TrueResults and when the work up was complete the staff at Trueresults said their surgeons would not work with my insurance. I went to my insurance company and was referred to Dr. Davis. I went to see him in Feb. and he recommended a sleep study. Did that in March. It's happening so fast and now my surgery date is June 6th. I have not gone to a support group yet. I really want to attend one soon.

I am also the wrong person to talk to about the pre-op diet. The only pre-op diet I followed was nothing to eat or drink after midnight on the eve of the surgery. LOL.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
