Diet after banding?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting ready to have the band done, and I was wondering if your doctors were telling you to eat basically only Protein? My doctor is using the same diet as for the Roux-N-Y patients, and that surprised me. From what I've read, I thought I could eat vegetables, and tiny bits of other things. Thanks for your help!!

Hey Longhorn, welcome to LBT!

We can eat anything we can tolarate in little bandster bite and bits. The general rule is to get your Protein in first, then your veg, then if you have room, your carbs. And of course, no drinking while eating.

I don't know what the rules are for the different by-pass patients, since I never even considered that route.

Hope that helps, and again, welcome!

Hi Longhorn

I eat what I want, however I do focus on Protein first and make sure I get in my 60 grams a day. I have a hard time with breads, pasts and rice, you will come to find out by trial and error which foods work best for you. I do not feel like I am on a diet. I do not have to weigh my foods, count points , buy certain "diet" foods.

I do find myself making better food choices now

I have lost 90 lbs since April6th 2004

without dieting and still enjoying food!

Some band surgeons are more strict with rules. My first surgeon specifically told me never to diet again. The key is to get enough Protein along with a variety of other foods.

However, my current surgeon is strict and actually wants me on a diet. He said it's typical that most patients will lose about 1/2 their weight with just the band, but in order to lose the rest we have to count calories.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
