Post Op Low Grade Fever..Anybody??

Recommended Posts

Last night was my first night home from the hospital and I woke with chills and a fever of 99.5. I called my doc this morning and was told that it is common and that unless it's 101.5, I should worry. Has anybody else had this post op and was it considered normal. I'm paranoid about having an infection.

I don't know about your insurance but since I'm a military spouse I can go to a military ER no problem. And I go for every little thing because you never know what is happening (it's hard to get appointments with my PCM). I'd rather go to the ER and them tell me that I'm wasting my time then to find out later on that I should have gone as soon as I had symptoms.

I hope your fever comes down and it's nothing serious! Keep us posted.

Yes. The same thing happened, but I had a fever of 103. Then came the diarrhea. My Doctor said (and I've found quite a few posts regarding this) that perhaps it is cause by an imbalance of good vs. bad bacteria that occurs temporarily from "messing around" with your stomach. I lost 15lbs in 4 days (all Water, it came right back) but then it went away as quickly as it came

A low grade temp is not unusual after surgery. You just need to watch for other symptoms like redness at the wound sites, congestion, increased pain or swelling. There are losts of things that can go wrong after surgery but it is very difficult to just treat a temp. If you start an antibiotic to soon you could mask something serious. Just give it another 24-48 hours it will either go up or go away. If it goes up you need to see your Dr.

I had exactly the same temp a few days post-op and got exactly the same response from my doctor (101.5) is the point when you need to go to the doc to get it checked out.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
