The "Realize" Band

Recommended Posts

Kat,

My doctor uses the Realize Band. Basically, the morning of the surgery, they will decide which one to use. I think it is based on their supply. I don't think there is any difference between the two.

Hi Kat! I am being banded on Friday with the Realize band. My surgeon already knows that is what he is using...as he is switching over to the Realize band. Some differences are: less errosion, less slippage, more stable port and self adhesive. There is a Realize site as well that shows comparason.

Thank-you for your reply. I was told on Monday that my doctor is now going to use the "realize" band. I feel better knowing there are others besides myself who are going to have this type of band, not much difference, I agree.

Is anyone's doctor using the "realize" band?

Kat

I had surgery 4-8-08. My doctor uses the Realize band. He has been using it since 10-2007 and said his patients are doing much better with it. There have been no complaints, and a lot less problems.

Since surgery I had not felt hungry, but that is starting to change. After I ate I felt very full, but now I feel like I could eat a little more. I do not know if he put any cc's in the band during surgery. I'm scheduled for a fill on Friday.

Hello,

I met with my surgeon last week who said he just switched over to the Realize band and he loves it! Said it was easy for him to put in, also mentioned the benefits listed above and raved about the Realize website for support! I can't wait... 12 days to go until surgery! Good Luck Everyone!

I asked my surgeon which band he would recommend if his wife was having surgery...he said the LapBand. I also thought the LapBand seemed "stronger" that the Realize band--had more substance. Other than that, the doc said reports of the two have been the same as far as success goes.

Realize has an involved website, but LapBand is going to have one too--competition, you know.

Hi, I was banded on 3/25 with the realize band. It's all my doc uses. I love it. No cc's at surgery. Then 5 weeks later I got 3 cc's. Feels like 1 or 2 more will do it.

My doc is now using the Realize band. I go tomorrow for dietician, physical therapy appts and to see the coordinator, and to a support group in the evening. They also are going to want a chunk of change tomorrow...I am self pay. Then on the 22nd, see surgeon and hosp preadmission. lab work, xray and whatever and surgery date is probably going to be June 2 or 4th. I am really getting excited about it. I have stopped drinking soda's now for the last week and I think that's gonna be harder even than the liquid diet!!

I looked at the Realize site. Looks like Ethicon (Johnson and Johnson) is the manufacturer. Is it merely a "me too' product, or are there real design differences? Anyone actual read the study? Is there a link to it somewhere? This is their FDA approval study for 3 years, and is certainly going to be presented in the most favorable terms by the web-site and manufacturer.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
