May exercise challenge

Recommended Posts

Well, as one has not been started yet, I'll start my 2nd month in a row challenge thread.

Last night I made it into the gym and did my upper body and cardio in one hard stretch.

This morning I did the same with lower body and cardio as tonight there is a get together for our Lt that retired last Friday. Have to make that. No beer though. I've had my quota for the week. (ok, a little more than my quota:rolleyes:)

Had my monthly appt with the PA yesterday. She keeps calling me her star patient for what I've done with the program. Said as I have lost 49% of my excess body weight, (by my count that means they think I should weigh about 175 . Ain't no way that is happening) I no longer have to come in each month. I can set my own schedule. I'm going to go 2 mos this time and see how it goes.

Ok everyone, let's start up the next month and keep the encouragement for each other going.

1 more week until my next 5k. This one will be more hilly, so I may not get the same time. But, just doing it is the important part, right?

Thanks for adding the May thread.

I'm in for 15 hours in May (I know it's not much, but this is alot in comparison to my previous workout regime & I don't want to set the bar TOO high :) )

I work out twice a week with a trainer for weight training (doing cardio on my own), but a few weeks ago when I'd been at a plateau for a little while, she decided to make me do cardio between sets so my heart rate was up the entire workout .... i.e. kicking my @$$!!

Well, yesterday on my way to see her I got a call from daughter's school & had to pick dtr up instead ... rescheduled to work-out this morning & ALMOST cancelled on her from not wanting the butt-kick ... but I remembered, this is only the 2nd day of the month & I don't want more of the same!!! So, I DID IT!!!

1 Hour Total Body Workout down, 14 to go

Good Luck All

ALMOST cancelled on her from not wanting the butt-kick ...

Funny you mention this. As I was working out my legs this morning, I was joking with one of the personal trainers at the gym while she was with a client. I asked if it wasn't to early to be torturing someone. She came back with "you are here voluntarily every day, so which is worse?". I retorted that what I did would be called masochistic (sp). What she does is sadastic.:lol::)

lol - the girl I train with is a friend, so I give her a hard time & complain the whole time! We've called her the Gym Nazi, among other titles, for a long time.

Since today was a make-up she was piggy-backing me with another client - when that lady left, she told me, "Don't kill yourself" -- I responded, "If I do, it's homicide" (and pointed to the culprit!!) LOL

Yeah, since I spend so much time at the gym, I've gotten to know most of the trainers pretty well. We joke around quite often. If you can't have fun at the gym, you shouldn't be going.

I'm in too!! I plan to do a minimum of 4 hours cardio a week. And somewhere in all of spare time - I need to start lifting weights. I have chicken arms

I will (or plan to) run 5k on Mon, Wed, Fri

Do Cardio butt-kick class on Thur

Any suggestions on when I can fit in doing my legs? I don't want to be so sore that I can't run the next day.

Last goal for the month - I want to be able to use the ellyptical machine w/o thinking I'm going to die. Right now, 5 min and I think I need to call 911. I don't know why this one is so hard for me.

good luck whosya !!! can't wait to hear about your race this wkend!!

hey wombat - since doing pretty hard weight training w/my trainer; my cardio is down...but not gone; by no means - just working on a balance. i'm introducing some sports in the picture in the next few wks (soccer/tennis) i want to shake those last 15lbs.

i'm kinda digging the way my arms are right now - the legs (my problem), i have to work at a couple times a wk. squats/lunges/leg press/ blah blah blah - all the things i can't stand - are starting to show better results.

i think w/the running you've been doing - the elliptical will be a breeze after some time.

hope your doing well....

happy wkend all~

Thanks Luluc!

Honestly Wombat i have heard from some that doing weights on your legs is not of much benefit. I have done it before and i gave it up to work on my upperbody and spend the time doing running cycling and swimming for my legs.

But heck it could all be wrong too. Its all a matter of opinion.

I with you on the Elpictikill, i cant do it worth a crap either. I can run 5k but cant do 2 mins on the elipikill

I'm glad I'm not the only one!!! Ok - I'm not up to running yet, but I can do the treadmill all day long, but forget about the eliptokill (great name for it! lol) -- the few times i've gotten on one I feel like Shannon Elizabeth after a dance on Dancing with The Stars ... as if I have Emphasema (sp?)

Good Lord I thought it was just me!!! Whew!

My upper body is starting to look kinda scrawny so I really need to focus on that. But hellllooo - why couldn't losing weight have taken away the "bat wings" with it!!!!!

I do the lunges / squats "hell" on my cardio class day. That woman is insane and evil!

Thanks for the advice lulu and whosya! I'm going to skip the legs workout for now.

Saturday - 6 hours pouring beer at Kenny Chesney concert

I think I'm done volunteering for awhile - I am just wiped out now!

Good luck Whosya and TexasFire!!!!!

you are so good w/your volunteering wombat!!!

probably best to forgo the weights (lower body); my lower back is actually starting to give me some problems w/all the squats/lunges. not sure if it's the RA or just too many; actually got a break from my trainer today on those to give it some rest.

this wkend, no gym - no cardio. hubby and i took a break from it all.

today:

3mile warm up on bike

50min session w/trainer (core / resistance training: upper body/arms)

**have a 100lb lab that was just neutered; so have to walk him multiple times a day - so not to run thru the pool just yet** averaging around 2mile walk per day.

have a good wk all~

Ok - it was raining outside today so I hit the treadmill. (I'm clearly avoiding the elliptical!!!)

I ran 2.9 miles and just didn't have anything left. DH decided to come up beside me as I was sprinting at the end and threw me all off. I can't turn my head or I run off the stupid treadmill.

I was so mad at him because I was soooo determined to do a 5k without stopping. (I was doing 6.5mph when he showed up - grrrrr)

Anyway - I ran most of it at 4.6, ran 3min at 5.0 in the middle of my run with a 60 sec 6.0 sprint; towards the end I ran for 60 sec at 5.0, 60 sec at 6.0 and 30 sec at 6.5.

Ok, I am also, I need all the motivation and motivators I can get, I have been going to the gym for 3 weeks now, I do 20 min on treadmill, as of last week 20 min on the eliptokill, and did 5 sessions with a trainer who in my last session managed to help me pull or tear a muscle in my right shoulder and collarbone area so since then I can hardly raise my right arm, pain up my neck and ear, but I am hanging in there. I also do hip ad/abductor and light free weights, swim laps,,I go 4 x a week, when I am not in gym I walk to thrift stores etc shopping for books for my grandkids.

I found part of the thing that helps me with the elliptokill is to have the right musical beat going, and not to be on with someone near you tearing it up.. I also warm up on treadmill first then move to elliptokill. It is still a killer though, but oh it gets my heart rate up so much faster.

My hands clap for those of you running in marathons etc,, I am from PA/DE and ths Houston Texas humidity and heat is more than I can stand, no outside walk or run for me.

Wombat, I had Dr. Spivak do my band March 28, have I met you at one of the support meetings on tuesday night?

I am commiting to lets say at least 3 days a week for 2 hours each time. How often do we want to post to update each other, I am new to this.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
