Is this normal at 2 weeks post-op?

Recommended Posts

This Saturday May 3 will be two weeks since I was banded. I have really been feeling great, losing weight very easily and keeping liquids down with no problem. Today I had severe left shoulder pain, which has not happened after the first 4 days or so. I ended up taking a cup of coffee, adding frozen yogurt, Protein Powder and ice, mixing it up in the blender and drinking about 4 ounces of it, it totally helped me to pass the gas and go to the restroom. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this much gas at 2 weeks past surgery day? My stomach is sore at the port area as well. Is this normal? Other than that I truly feel great! I am happy to have had this surgery and very happy for changing my life.

I am only 3 days post op but the gas I have is something horrible:eek:. I can pass gas, well down below, but cannot burp to save my life. I have pains in my chest and my back, which I am told some do have trouble in the begining. I was told to walk, try lying in different positions and that eventually my body will catch up to the procedure. Not sure what else to tell ya except maybe try some Gas-X. The nurse in the hospital told me that it was okay to take that, just becareful how much you take, and it does depend on the meds your doc has you on.

I am ten days out and still find myself with discomfort. my port site is very tender and tonight I have pain on my right side up into my back. I think it depends on the person and how much you are doing. My surgeon said the port site will be tender for quite awhile. mama59

Totally normal. At least it was for me. The gas used to fill up your stomach cavatity with has no where to go - so it picks an area to settle in to. Mine was the shoulder like your's is now. It took about two good weeks. I tried to stay away from gassy producing foods - but, your going to be a farting machine  I had my lap band done 7/2007 and I get some shoulder pain still if I completely stress out at work but, it's nothing like the first two weeks after surgery. It will get better! Ps. Hot pad works at night too!

It's not gas that settles in the actual shoulder...it is gas that pushes on your diaphram, that causes pain in your shoulder due to certain nerves or something like that...very normal that's why I know this. I've read many people complain about it. Luckily I didn't have this.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
