Post Op Diareha and weakness

Recommended Posts

I am one week out from my banding and finally back at work. I had planned to go back to work 2 days ago but about 4 days after surgery I started getting diareha and it left me very week and light headed and unable to even stand for more than 5 minutes at a time. I have not heard of anyone else with this problem. I think with Pepdo I have the diareha under control. I still however feel a little lite headed at times. Did anyone else have a problem with weekness the first week out???

Yes! You are not alone, unfortunately I was very constipated the first week but for the last week I have diarrhea everytime I eat. I am very frusterated and my doctor said it is not caused by the band (yeah right). I think everyone's body copes with the trauma of the surgery and pain meds differently. Hang in there though, after about two weeks, you will feel almost back to normal.

I had it horribly starting with day 2. The doctor figured it was due to the IV antibiotics that I was given in the hospital. He told me to eat Activia yogurt (good enzymes) and if I wanted acidolpholus (herbal supplement you can get at wal-mart or health food stores). I took both and it helped greatly.

Good luck with your band.

Absolutely...I am 3 days post-op and still very very weak. I have been walking as much as possible; but am exhausted and must lay down after my walk. I too had hoped to go back to work by now, but have NO energy!

I understand and you are not alone. I am god let me think I month post op today. I don't have the problems with my bowels but I do tire faster and sometimes when I turn my head I feel like I get dizzy. I think it has to do with how much food I am taking in and my body adjusting to the new amount. As far as being tired, I was told 2-3 months..........

I had diarrhea after surgery as well and the nurse told me it was from all the liquids i was consuming. I wasn't eating anything solid enough to "bulk up my stools". I would look for it to get better when you start to eat more solid food. Hang in there!

I am 12 days out and feeling much better. The first few days are to be expected - tired and weak. I found that drinking Isopure, which is a clear liquid drink from Vitamin shoppe or other such places has helped. It has 40 grams of Protein per 20 oz bottle with 0 sugar.

If you can get someone to pick you up a few bottles, this may help with your energy level since you really aren't taking in any foods/calories, etc.

As for your bathroom issues - I too had major issues a few days out but can say that starting my 2nd week and now being on thick liquids (cream Soup, oatmeal/grits, pudding), my habits are returning to normal and so will yours. Hang in there - it does get better.

I I think I know exactly what you are going through. I was banded on April 4th. At first my bowels were a little loose so I figured it was because i was only having liquids. After 5 days, all heck broke loose. I just about went into the hospital because i had lost soo much liquid and nothing was staying in. I was out of commission for 2 weeks and about 3 days. My nutritionist and Dr. were really pushing that i get liquid Protein and Gatorade into me.

Well, my lactose intolerance went into overdrive. I spent lots of money trying different "lactose free" Protein drinks that still had whey (which still caused me to react as if it was whole milk). The other problem was I am not a sweet drink person. I rarely drank soda and i have always disliked Gaterade. Again I called my Dr..

My Dr. said that sometimes our bodies, after abdominal surgery, suddenly can't handle the milk products and our bodies may also be reacting to the fake sugars in some of the sports drinks, and if you're sensitive to sugar, you body will react in the same way to sugary drinks. Which mine did. The Dr. aslo suggested I take Immodium AD (tiny little pill--easy to swallow). Which really helped alot.

I found a gatorade I could handle--froze it and ate it, (slowly) and found a Protein Drink that i could handle (went online looking for one that i could take). I was very weak and had to be helped getting up and laying down. I was a mess

This is my 4th week and i am just now feeling back to normal. I still have days when i have to stop and take a rest. I suggest you take it easy with the foods, do what the Dr. says and know that this too shall pass.

Banded 4/4/08

First fill coming up 5/6/08--can't wait

I had the sleeve done 7 days ago. I just started passing gas yesterday. However, I quickly found out (at work) that I should not pass gas unless I am on the toilet. I am on a full liquid diet, but using shakes to get my Protein. It is really bad and inconvient. I was not expecting this.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
